Three Gannett titles are among newspapers winning awards of overall excellence -- the top honor -- in the giant, large and midsize circulation categories of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers annual contest.
USA Today, the Detroit Free Press and The Des Moines Register were among 163 total winners in SABEW's 15th annual Best in Business Journalism competition, recognizing top publications and websites, plus the best business news reporting last year.
In all, there were 796 entries, the second highest total in the contest's history. The New York Times captured the most awards: 13.
(An aside: SABEW gives a lot of awards in this contest: More than 20% of the 2009 entries were honored, for example. I wonder if the trade group's contest organizers would consider reducing the number of categories so the awards were more competitive. Just sayin'.)

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
