Tips | Guess who's coming to dinner? Corporate!

I'm told that a senior-level team from Corporate is now making the rounds to as many as 33 community newspaper sites; the Tallahassee Democrat is on tap today.

Heading the party, apparently, is U.S. newspaper division President Bob Dickey. I believe the team has already been to North Carolina's Asheville Citizen-Times, where Dickey reportedly told a "town hall''-style meeting that no new layoffs are planned. I suspect that means no company-wide layoffs beyond spot reductions here and there as production facilities are closed, and advertising work is transferred to the new production hubs in Des Moines and Indianapolis.

So, with that as background, questions:
  1. Is your worksite on the schedule for a visit, and when?
  2. Has your site already been visited? If so, who was there, and what are the news highlights?

  3. Dickey and company spent Tuesday and part of Wednesday at the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. He told us that he hasn't made a decision yet on furloughs for the 2nd quarter, that revenues over the next 2 weeks will play a big role in determining that and that there's a chance the furloughs will be treated differently from property to property, depending on how business is at each locale. He also didn't rule out higher-paid employees being hit harder by the furloughs if they are done in the 2nd quarter. After hearing him b.s. us for an hour, then waffle on the furloughs, I'm convinced we WILL be furloughed again in the second quarter. Isn't that wonderful?
