USAT | A naked grab for consumers' attention

[Saints quarterback Brees in the new Dove soap ad]

In a type of advertisement I haven't seen before, USA Today's homepage is now featuring an ad for a Dove brand of men's soap that stars New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, naked from the waist up in a shower. It's not a full monty, of course, but it's jarring nonetheless. The ad pops across, starting from the right and crossing over to the left, finally filling up the full screen. Anyone know the technical name for this type of advertisement?

  3. Annoying is right. Pretty soon the web is going to be so filled with intrusive ads that I might have to go back to watching television. Leave it to USA Today to be so innovatively annoying and parochial in their use of technology and online graphic ads.

  4. Plus I have a feeling Brees looks better half-naked than that ad showed.

  6. The actual Dove for Men website used the same effect.

And to think, at one time people fought strip ads on the front page. Credibility just isn't the revenue producer we thought it was.
