Gannett confirms exec changes at USA Weekend

(Updated at 1:20 p.m. with Parade move) This just in from Corporate: Gannett announced Marcia Bullard, president and CEO of USA Weekend, is retiring after 35 years with the company, effective March 31. USA Weekend Publisher Charles Gabrielson has been named president and publisher of the weekly magazine, Gannett says in a statement.

The announcement, made moments ago, confirms a tip I received last month, and comes as the Sunday supplement's news staff is merged into the features department at USA Today. That combination is set to be completed by April. The magazine's website has already adopted the template used by virtually all of Gannett's community newspapers.

Bullard is perhaps best known as the champion of the magazine's "Make A Difference Day," an ongoing project to promote volunteerism.

The executive shift comes amid a similar shakeup at rival Parade. FishbowlNY is reporting now that the magazine's editor-in-chief, Janice Kaplan, has left. "Although a good-bye memo to staff seemed to suggest that Kaplan is leaving the weekly magazine on good terms, we have heard that she was asked to leave,'' the trade site says.

  1. If being merged into the USAT features department, shouldn't they report to a USAT Editor? Not another emtpyhead "Publisher." Seems like waste to me...

  2. Was Bullard basically the magazine's editor, too? Executive Editor Jack Curry left the magazine in March 2009, but I don't recall seeing a replacement named.

  3. No. After Jack's departure, due to his feelings towards Bullard, the Managing Editor Brenda Turner took over for most of the duties. Bullard wasn't a fan of getting "her hands dirty."

  4. USA Weekend staff, including Brenda Turner and what's left after last month's purger n merger, now reports to Life ME Susan Weiss.

  5. USA Today SVP of Advertising Brett Wilson abruptly left last November to take over as publisher of Parade.
