Comments | How do you want overflow handled?

The free Blogger software I used to publish Gannett Blog automatically breaks comment strings when they reach 200. You then must reload the next string. I don't know whether there is a maximum number of comments. I'm expecting this could happen in the days ahead. Here's how I handled that during the December layoffs. Here's what you saw:

This section is now closed to new comments. Please go to Part 2.

What is your preference? Should I break the strings at:
  • 100
  • 150
  • 200
  • Some other number
  • Don't care
Please post your replies in the comments section, below. To e-mail confidentially, write gannettblog[at]gmail[dot-com]; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the green rail, upper right.

  1. 200 or more

  2. 100. It is already a pain to scroll down to find out where you left off last reading. It would make it easier and faster to get to the freshest news at 100, or even less.

  3. p.s. remember that many of us are sneaking looks at this blog while ostensibly working, and need to get to the news the fastest way.

  4. Batches of 100 works. I thought that was pretty easy to follow that way.

  5. Jim, do whatever is easiest for you. No matter the choice, someone will complain. I think we've all seen that some on here are just not happy unless they're unhappy. :-)

  6. 100 is easier for the iPhone.

  7. LOL 11:12 you are so right :)

  8. Very interesting to hear you mention iPhone screens. I try to format the pages so that there are enough items to grab your attention, but no so many that they create page-load problems. Ditto for crackberries, although I don't own one.

How am I doing, iPhone/Blackberry users? I'm very, very interested in mobile users for my next career.

  9. 200 is fine with me. Keeps it all together. Scrolling really isn't that much of a chore. God, has this country gotten soft or what! We now complain about pushing a mouse button? Glad I didn't have to be in foxhole with any of these people.

  10. I just got a chuckle from 4:07. Yes, your average Gannett employee is soft. And even more soft at the Crystal Palace where they whine if the salmon is overcooked in the cafe.

  11. No - you are lazy for not bothering to understand many of us aren't sitting at computers reading. We're on the go in THIS century. Jim - 100 is too many for BB scrolling. But otherwise the blog has been great for mobile. Now teach Gannettoid!!!

  12. 6:42 is correct; Most folks have too much moving and working to do to be at a computer all the time. No Gannett employee who has survived this turmoil so far is weak.
And if you are at a computer, you're doing six things at one time. It amazes me how some folks are able to spend so much time scrolling blogs all day. Perhaps, they don't have enough to do. Hmm.
    Jim, 100 is perfect.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
