Farewell | Only four days left: Please post now!

Gannett Blog closes at 12:01 a.m. Friday. With only occasional exceptions, I'm only posting comments related to layoffs and other job cuts, because I'm expecting high comment volume. Depending on your time zone, you now have just four days left to post. Please post publisher's and other memos in the comments section, below, or to gannettblog[at]gmail[dot-com].

  1. Note: I'm allowing for 24 hours of wiggle room, depending on when notification memos start coming in. (I'm not totally heartless, folks.)

  2. I just wanted to say thank you for fighting the good fight, Jim. This blog has been a window on the world for a lot of people who were otherwise kept in the dark.

Good luck on your future endeavors!

  5. From a purely financial standpoint, I would have hired an an salesperson to target the financial services industry: banks and other retirement asset managers. You guys are now rolling over millions. Labor lawyers would be lucrative, plus executive headhunters. Finally, I would have eliminated all travel and extra technology spending.

That said, I'm amazed that I grossed $11,000 in less than eight months. Readers WILL pay for EXCLUSIVE content IF you ask.

  6. Jim, it saddens me greatly that we will no longer have you to "ourselves." I wish you the best in your new phase. Thank you for your selflessness by helping a lot of us who otherwise would have no voice. It's nice to know gannettoid.com is there, but it's not the same without you!!

Also, good luck to all of us still waiting to see what this week will bring.

  7. This blog has been a fascinating thing to watch and take part in.
First of all, and most importantly, in my view, was the original, important journalism that Jim did.
Then there was the sense of community that was provided during the layoffs, furloughs and cutbacks.
On the other end was the relentless personal attacks on Jim, which led to the unfortunate bodyguard hiring and, as best I can tell, unverified accusations that corporate is actively supporting many of these personal attacks.
But now, as the blog nears the final days, it once again is providing a place where people can communicate during another round of layoffs.
What a short, strange journey this has been. It's going to be a great master's thesis someday.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
