    Looks like the AP is trying to rid itself of all its veteran staffers that don't know what facebook is.

    "To be considered for a buyout, the employee must be at least 55 years of age, have at least 10 years of AP service, but the combination of age and years of service must also add up to 75.

    The buyout includes a $500 cash payment for each year of service with AP and a pension payout that is 14% to 16% above the amount the employee would ordinarily receive."

  4. It would be nice if, Jim ,would come clean about him using "Personal Email information" to email people to promote his "Gay blog", the new one. I personally mind that my information is being used to promote a bunch of guys in crotch hankerchiefs and feel affended!! What if I took Jim's personal email address and gave it to total strangers and asked him to go to a pro_anti gay site? Why would he not be affended and why doesn't this ex-editor understand the conflict of interest and acknowdledge it??????? unbelieveable!! Jim I know "gay People" and you definately don't understand the other side of the table and ignorant to bloggers' requests!!!!!!

  8. After 10 years, I was let go from Gannett from lack of sales. However, after asking for help for several months, nothing was done till two weeks prior to my being let go...they drove my territory and actually listed accounts that were not even mine and a couple that had been out of business for over a year...Real nice assistance to try to save a long time dedicated employee huh?
    There is no ill will feeling except to a retail ad manager that claimed to be my friend until he got into his position from being demoted from the CAM to supervisor and then to RAM...real nice how gannett works...if you can not succeed in one aspect of advertising, let's try another...This too shall pass and Karma will prevail.
    I had already started college to pursue a career change, maybe that is what it was...if you are not going to kill yourself working for gannett, they do not want to keep you!
    There is light at the end of the tunnel after gannett...in my case there is a rainbow as well! :)

    That's funny. What does an economic model of communism have to do with human sexuality?

    Especially in the light of Russia's recent crack down on the attempted Gay march in Moscow. Not that Russia is communist anymore, but it is the same culture. So it is easy to say a former communist country is just as homophobic as our 2:08 AM author.

    What's to say this blog isn't fascist? My belief is it is capitalistic. Just like Gannett and so many other publishing companies that only prints the comments and articles that they want.

    This blog is a laugh riot when it comes to idiots sounding off with non sequiturs.

  11. There was something about this poster's comments on Gannett's layoffs from Tuesday's blog that struck me, and I'd like to post it here:


    "In the view of many, the wrong people were dismissed. Management again blew it and missed out on an opportunity to rid this company of the true slackers. Meanwhile, the suffering of truly good people is increasing by the month as this job market shows no signs of welcoming mid and late-career professionals."

    I remain employed and I'm not a whiner. I "get it" and have enough skills to (hopefully) remain with the company. But I, along with other people in their 50s, cannot keep from worrying and looking over my shoulder constantly, given the environment management has established. The slackers and dead weight remain, and the old ways continue. Why can't someone look at who is productive and who is useful rather than salaries and age?

    Here's the reality of blog demographics, and a bit about marketing 101: Gannett Blog drew slightly over 30,000 unique visitors during the past 30 days, Google Analytics says. The figure rises and falls, depending on news.

    I estimate that no more than 1,200 of those unique readers are gay or lesbian. I get that figure by applying exit polling data from the November elections; 4% of those responding self-identified as gay or lesbian.

    I then divide that figure in half, to 600. My new blog, after all, is aimed at affluent gay men. Now, while 600 is a good-sized figure, that leaves another 29,400 who are not part of my target audience.

    In fact, when I begin promoting my new site at launch, I'll be working with other gay bloggers, who might be willing to share their audience with me. But blogs with predominantly heterosexual readers? No.

    The best thing I ever did was leave Gannett.(by choice) Advertising revenue will continue to plummet and Gannett will continue to expect the unattainable from their ad reps. How does a newspaper save money? By making the goals so unattainable that the rep works harder than ever without ever making their commission. This has been done for ages. You're better off not working in advertising anymore-your luck changed for the better once you left Gannett.

  15. Several posters today mentioned "slackers" and "dead weight" that have been kept around many of the Gannett sites even following dramatic RIFs and firings. This is particularly true at the courier post and especially in the advertising department. Age discrimination does not seem to be the issue at this newpaper because many of the "slackers" who remain have been there for decades! It's who is friendly with who and who has what on the company and certain people.

    you are so right...at our paper the goals were flat to last year, however they moved the numbers around by increasing online and non-dailies or core...whatever they wanted to do, but left it flat to last year. however, if there were significant deviations, they were rarely looked at...even if the business was on credit kill or OOB...

    First off, please go study some political science and come back when you have a better understanding of communism. I'm pretty sure that you meant some form of totalitarianism, however communism in its many forms cannot be strictly characterized as totalitarian.
    Secondly, please open your mind to the broader usage of terms that you are already aware of. Confidential, as used by Jim, is a bit of word-play with a specific referent. Just because you lack comprehension of the referent, doesn't mean that Jim's usage is incorrect. Jim could have done better, but I imagine if he had, more 'tardz like you would probably be squacking.
    3:02--- Are you 2:08? I think you are. It is evident by your frequent mispellings. Also, if you have a problem with your e-mail address, then why did you give it out in the first place? You post anonymously now, so how is it that you have come to be in this situation? You are either a liar, or a PR goon. Which is it?

  20. 8:51 -- The sad part of this is that you cannot have "enough skills" to remain with the company. I'm in the same boat.

    My multimedia abilities are as good as those of nearly anyone at my paper. They're certainly better than those of any of the newsroom managers. But the bottom line is that the industry will never again be the profit center it once was. So, unless you're comfortable working for entry level wages, you have to try to find a different career.

    I know it's tough, especially for older workers, but I don't see any choice. It's either wait for the economy to recover, then try to ride out the rest of your career in journalism -- likely at a significant pay cut -- or move on to something else.

    I realize lots of people believe we'll be rescued by some magical online media savior, but I don't believe most of them understand the Web. We've had more than a decade to develop a viable online business plan and one is yet to evolve. My guess is that we'll never get one that makes the type of money newspapers did.

  22. I can see Gannett is moving towards keeping their TV and internet and new mobile services and they are reducing their print services. When I watch one of their news channel I can see an interactive media for viewers. Does anyone think there will be more layoffs coming after the long summer of low print ad revenue? The thing is the people still working in print are too busy to retrain and get into multimedia. So they won't be of any use to Gannett when the time comes.

  25. Corporate will deny age has anything to do with it, but like others I am afraid that anyone over 50 left in this company has a huge target painted on their backs. As much as they might pretend they "get it," they really don't live it as younger people do. They are not in the IM and Starbucks culture. They are not trendy. They are old farts clinging to their paychecks in hope that no one will notice them. But they stick out like sore thumbs in this economic and cultural climate, and they are getting in the way of the changes this industry needs to make to survive. You had your day. Now it is time to move on and let another generation have their turn.

    Yes, I have seen what the "younger" workers bring to the table, and it is frightening. The journalism lacks any context or feel for value. They are lazy and unmotivated workers who call in sick on a sniffle.

They brought this storm on themselves, and they are going to drown in it as a result. As for corporate, it needs to slim down, think young, and jump on the bandwagon where advertisers have gone, rather than putting out products that appeal only to a generation that is dying off.

    Sure, there are lousy young reporters. But there are lousy old reporters, too.

    The best newsrooms feature a mix of age and experience and fresh, young talent. When the two blend it can be wonderful and both groups can learn from one another, but not if they are adversarial.

    It surely is, and the company may get out of this ok, due to the economic situation. Lots of kids went to school recently and learned some of the latest and greatest web technologies. There's not a lot of companies hiring with benefits, etc., so they may well end up at Gannett. Gannett even has a seedling program established just to attract and groom new talent. So, when it's all said and done, G may indeed be able to replace the 50 ups with new kids that are up on Ajax or Domino. They may even be able to write CRUD apps for the kinds of interactive portals that the entire company is struggling with right now. Sure beats snapping up a bunch of off-market companies that can't and don't deliver.

    Gannett won't know quite how to utilize their talents long-term and when the economy improves, these kids will probably leave Gannett in droves for better offers.

No one ever said lifetime job to me when I signed on. We have people here so old their hair has turned orange because they are using so much Hair Color for Men.

  33. Regarding 8:51: I work at USAT. I can't think of a place within the newspaper division that has a proportionally greater level of editors that have less to do. Lots of dead weight that crosses more than just age groups. Someone could cull, but they would NEVER do it on an editor level. Everyone who is leaving is at the reporter level, and in their late 40s and up. Why is that? Not just fear. People are fed up. They aren't being listened to. Or they are afraid to speak up.Even if the paper could hire, it won't replace anyone based on skills or knowledge or news judgement. That would make too much common sense. They'll start with demographics like they usually do and lower the bar, yet again. Its not about putting out a quality product and it hasn't been for a long time.

    I'm at Starbucks daily, I IM, am involved in social networking sites and none of that in itself is worth mentioning if it weren't for the fact you did. Are you of the impression Starbucks and IM is what makes a person trendy and relevant? What am I thinking- Of course you do.

  45. A few years back at The Arizona Republic, a young lady did a presentation to all managers including senior staff, Publisher, Editors... She worked in the Marketing department and explained how the younger generation views the world while insulting everybody in the room close to her parents age repeatedly referencing the flawed ways her parents and "people like them" view the world. Many likened her to the new driver who just got their license and as a result, is obviously skilled and as capable a driver as anybody.

    After that meeting, it never really seemed to matter what she said as her point of view was so limited and narrow minded.

    Best of all, she didn't even realize she was insulting all senior management, Publisher, President, CFO, Editor...

  47. It's so sad. I read this blog because it's the only source of information of what's happening and could be upcoming with Gannett. This was really valuable as the layoffs and furloughs rolled out and with the constant rumors of more layoffs.

    Reading many of the recent comments, I'm sad to observe that many of us in the trenches have turned against each other. I can't help but wonder if that was part of the goal of the posts obviously corporate wanks.

  49. In the broadcast engineering end, meanwhile, Gannett is eating its young. I don't know where the next generation of TV engineers is going to come from, because there is no one left under 45 yrs old. And some of those youngsters let go were quite talented and diligent --the exact sort you want and need to grow into the "old farts with institutional memory" 25 years down the road. Grizzled veterans do not pop into existance on demand --they have to be grown.

It would be poetic if you were to take that money and use it as startup costs and provide some real competition, something that is really needed in town. Gannett once again faces competition, and it's brought by money they could have had in pocket - that's a nice scenario.

  53. I was driving down to NYC from Rochester yesterday and we stopped at a rest area and I was able to pick up a copy of The Journal News in Westchester and Rockland Counties. I haven't seen the paper in a while and I was shocked on how bad it looked and the lack of content in it. Pretty sad for a readership area just outside NYC.

Back in 1975, there were raging fights in newsrooms between those supporting Nixon and his approach to ending the Vietnam War, and young college grads opposed to him and the war. The fights eventually resulted in a wholesale dumping of the World War II veterans, then in their 50's, in favor of the young. So now in their dotage, they must recognize much of what is happening today because they once participated in battles to get the old farts to retire or leave.

  56. Has anyone considered that "age" and "old" are relative terms? In this media age, 35 is old if that person also comes with a high salary, dependents and benefits.

    When I look at the type of content we are ALLOWED to produce anymore -- given our staff reductions and story quotas and post-before-you verfiy it culture -- OFCOURSE it makes sense to slim down to a staff of 23-year-olds making $12 an hour.

    Newspapers no longere produce the kind of content that requires experience, judgment and talent.

    It's over, people. If you want to be of service to your community, go be a teacher, run for office or join the helping professions.

    Journalism in its previous form no longer exists. Sad, but true.

  58. 2:49: As one of those 1975 young journalists the answer is: we weren't that patient, we were convinced we would do things better, more creatively, and we wanted the revolution NOW...BUT most of the young crowd I came in with had one thing in common - we knew the older reporters/editors had something worthwhile to teach us. There was an older woman on the copy desk back then (god rest her soul) who had worked her way up through the chauvinistic ranks and if she had told me to go jump off a bridge, swim back and write about it, I would have done so in a heartbeat, no questions. She was just one of many older journalists ho helped along the way...

    Fast forward 30 years...there were reporters far younger than I who patiently walked me through my computer illiteracy and to whom I will be eternally grateful. Learning is a two-way street. So is respect. Is it all dying along with journalism?

    If so, god help us all, this industry will devolve into a internet, crowd-sourcing clusterf**k - and there will be no way to tell what are the facts.

Well, according to the librarian, the subscription lapsed and when the library tried to renew, they were told by USAT that delivery could not begin for six weeks. Holy shit. There's every other major paper on that shelve except for USAT. Pitiful. Just pitiful.

The content and style are abominable. If we are really honest about it, the NY TIMES and the NY tabloids are not looking too great either, but they are much better than NJ! The only saving grace in this state is the Star Ledger, and they are also having problems!!!

  65. 4:34: Bodies that I walked over? Sorry, I didn't play that game, which is probably why I never got much beyond mid-level manager. There was healthy competition for stories and beats - sometimes I won, sometimes I lost. There was no lack of those trying to stab other people in the back, but I tried my best to be upfront about my differences with people. You have to have integrity - to your co-workers, to your sources, to the people affected by the stories you wrote. That's what being a journalist is - having the integrity to present the facts in the most unbiased manner possible.

  67. I'm not an APP apologist and Lord knows we have problems, but don't paint all the NJ papers with the same brush. They're not all abominable. And let's call it like it is, the Ledger isn't all that great these days and you can easily find stories and layouts in both the Ledger and the NY Times that were originally in the APP. And they also have a lot more money and staff then we do. Just sayin...

    The girl at the AZ Republic insulted the older people?

    Who is the freaking kids hearing whining about being insluted? I think you old farts need to grow up and accept the truth that your generations are controlling the banks and majority of businesses that put us in this mess. And to the jack ass that thinks Bill Clinton was such a wonder boy, wake the hell up, how many times was he offered Bin Laden on a silver platter 1, no 2, no, 3! 3 freaking times and Bush spent 7.5 years cleaning up that retard's mess after 9-11...This is all called the TRUTH, yes it may be hard to believe and even harder to accept...But it is reality and what actually happens...At least we can thank Al Gore for inventing the internet, so I guess that makes him responsible for the downfall of the newspaper business and elimination of your job....But hey I'm sure somehow it is Bush's fault that the economy tanked, even though the last high on the stock market was the day before the Dems took control of the House in 2006....That too is the truth, which is what matters....So shut your pie hole and whining that you hope everyone else tanks when they are 55, and blah blah blah....spend your time looking for a job instead of bitching on this blog...ole' Obama there is finally coming to his senses and believing all his rhetoric is bullshit too....he didn't release his stupid photos because it's now the younger generation that is on the front lines fighting this war to save your assess too, so get off your high freaking horse.....You might be old and experienced but that is why they made the word obsolete, which means your skill set is outdated or no longer needed, which could be the truth, its business. i understand all this and can't believe you older experienced people can't because I wouldn't expect the older grown-ups to spend all their time whining like little kids......And lay the hell off Jim, he is the only guy with spam that has the balls to respond and take your crap, unlike the 1000's of spam mail we all get daily...."The truth will set you free"....accept it and move on.

    How can i put this in terms you will understand? Perhaps in abbreviated form (because none of you spell well enough to complete a sentence in English without fucking it up): FOAD.

    It's not LMFAO, or LOL, but if you are over 35 you probably remember it. If the company gets rid of people over 50, etc., it's because vapid, hooked-on-wii, my space and starbucks morons like you will work for mucho less. While the folks in charge may be running the company into the ground (as so many say here), they're smart enough to protect what's left of their dividends.
