Mystery solved: About those missing comments

Regarding a slew of comments recently removed from a string, Google's Blogger software unit said yesterday: "We became aware of a bug affecting Blogger's comment feature. Within four hours of identifying the bug, we began to roll out a fix to all users affected. We take Blogger issues very seriously, and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. The bug has been fixed.''

  1. Uh huh. So it wasn't the evil empire that did it?

  2. Missing comments occur almost all the time for the Freep articles, as evidenced by the number of actal posts versus the total number of them.

Just today, for an editorial by the audience editor there suggesting that Obama should be vetted and criticized more, there were supposed to be ten comments. However, only four were in actual evidence--with 60% of them deleted from view, meaning that the Freep, under its new published and editor continues its censoring policies, it would appear. Some critical posts that do get through make mention of the Freep's continual deletions, saying that the language was not the problem--just the messages themselves.

Jim, I doubt that you censor except when needed, knowing that a good give-and-take attracts viewers. Tell that to Gannett and their Free Press. Maybe their lousy circulation and advertising revenue might improve.

  3. Censorship when needed huh? And who decides who gets to play god? I guess it is the blog owner's right to do whatever they want but I would also think when someone is supposedly a "journalist" they would do everything in their power to support the 4th ammendment. Anything less is, well...you fill n the blank.

Your post is full of fail.
    1) Blog owners can chop any comment they want. Period.
    2) Homophobic or threatening comments have no place anywhere; removing them is a good thing.
    3) The Fourth Amendment deals with unreasonable search and seizure.
    4) Is something being searched or seized by the government here, or did I miss that?
    5) Jim rocks.
    6) feh.
    That is all.

  5. Jim, I agree. You need to do more to protect us all from unreasonable search and seizure. Anything less, and clearly, you're a failure...

  6. 10:16 AM, your First Amendment (not Fourth) is ensured by the fact you can go create your own blog to write whatever comments you want that Jim doesn't want on his blog.

No law gives you the right to impose your will on someone else's property. Got that?

  7. So much for Jim's paranoia. No apology needed?

  8. It's not paranoia---wonder where the bug originated?

  9. Yeah, besides the fact Jim never claimed the missing comments were a plot against him, I'm not sure the consideration would be paranoia, either. I have a Blogger blog, and I didn't get that bug that "some" got.

Coincidence to Jim being a thorn in the side of corporate? Perhaps. But perhaps not.

I just took the time to watch the video of the shareholder meeting, and I'm glad I did. I am convinced he is being stalked and harassed on this blog by corporate trolls. I'll comment more of my thoughts about that on that post.

  10. 12:34 PM and 1:18 PM:

You think that somehow corporate caused a programming bug here on Blogger? Seriously?

You're all turning into a bunch of wackjobs. I'm outta here.

  11. @2:58: nice straw man.

  12. 2:58 PM, learn to read, jackass.

I'm sure you're not "outta here," but do let the door hit you where the good Lord split you when you go.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
