USAT | Is WSJ alone, chasing lost Marriott readers?

A reader says they got the following notice, after canceling a subscription to The Wall Street Journal. Is USA Today sending similar notes to its canceled subscribers?

Then, beginning June 1, you will always receive a complimentary Wall Street Journal when you stay at participating Marriott properties.

  3. You know, I somehow knew that Rupert Murdoch wasn't really aiming at the New York Times when he purchased the WSJ. He is bent on turning the WSJ into a national newspaper, and eating the circulation and money that USAT currently gets. Once he has dealt with USAT, then he might turn to the NYT, but I don't think NY is really his aim.

  4. USAT is gearing up a campaign aimed at Marriott guests that encourages them to update their profiles to indicate they want USAT.

    USAT also terminated some circulation DSM's yesterday.

    Idol speculation or do you have some basis for your comments?

    I saw tons of customer comments on Bill Marriott's blog complaining about the new USA TODAY delivery policy. I'll bet Marriott will begin to see this was a mistake.

  6. USAT is sliding backwards and it has as much to do with internal issues as it does the economy. A lot of brain drain has occurred across the board in the last year or two. The flagship has no one to blame but itself for finding itself in a weakening position. The "right stuff" that built the brand has left the building in favor of hordes of people who think the answer to everything lies on the web. The web is great and shows some promise, but it is not everything. Appears folks at the top have forgotten what built USA TODAY. Where there was once a sense of loyalty (this was a rare paper that never laid off people), there is now nothing but suspicion and mistrust.

    Where have you been? You must mean they never laid off anyone in editorial. I can tell you people were laid off as early as 1985. And many more since.
