Here's a question Reno's publisher must address

Reno Gazette-Journal employees can't be expected to raise the awkward question of this Gannett executive's employment status, amid what's been called massive layoffs at the Nevada daily. Publisher Ted Power should volunteer this information himself -- ASAP.

  1. This is the downside of Corporate's "two-fer" hiring policy for OC and other employees: At moments like this, nepotism destroys employee morale -- even if it's just the perception of nepotism.

  2. The individual you are going after worked for Gannett long before she met her husband. But that doesn't count right? In this day and age, why do you feel a woman has to give up her Gannett career just because her husband finds success in the same company. But I guess sexism is okay with you Jim. Maybe, just maybe, she doesn't want to live off her partner's money and success like some individuals we all know. Sorry if the truth hurts.

  3. No, 3:20, perhaps it's because her husband, regardless of how long she's been employed with the company or when they met, married or whatever, is the publisher, the one person who has the power to fire anyone at anytime. The same argument would apply if she were the publisher and he worked under her.

  4. Well, maybe if the woman he speaks of did an outstanding job at every job she did, it would be a different story. But I can let you know for sure that more than once this woman had some jobs created just for her and filled others that were WAY out of her area of expertise. No one else was given the kind of special treatment that she was. I never knew anyone else that worked as a top exec in Circ, Adv and Communications. Not saying that she isn't smart in her own right, but Gannett has a real habit of finding spouses jobs in the company - even if they are not qualified.

  5. Boys, boys, boys, sounds like you have a real problem with successful women. What's up, bad experience with a female teacher in grade school?

  6. 3:20 pm. I could and likely will make the same observation about other Gannett "two-fer" couples, where the more powerful of the two is a woman.

  7. Oh for Gods sake....this is not about "a successful female" vs the boyz...it's a CREATED job that makes BS for "the Pacific Region"...let's face it....these kind of "training jobs" have been cut everywhere a long long time ago...so it's a VERY GOOD question as to why after you cut the workforce by 10% you still keep a made up job....wife or no wife...man or woman. I love how you "girls" try and make it a "sexist" issue. It's about fairness...pure and simple.

  8. My impression is that she does not work directly for him, though I confess I do not know details.

Still my reason for this post is to pose directly a couple of "awkward questions" to you Tara...uh, I mean Jim.

Jim: what is your source of financial support? Does that support in any way compromise your objectivity as a journalist or commentator covering Gannett?

  9. The ALL TIME best 2fer was SCJ and Brooks...

  10. What about Leslie Hurst?

  11. Well you never made it an issue before Jim. There are many twofers around the company and you have NEVER brought it up. You don't even have your facts straight about who she reports to and where she gets her direction. But then. the facts never bothered you before, why start now?

  12. It's one thing when significant others, siblings, etc. work at one location where they report to a different boss/bosses. It's entirely another issue when one of them is the top decision maker...and, in times like these that relationship is even more suspect.

Besides, it's only natural and fair for people to ask, especially since so many people are losing their jobs. Plus, let's not forget that no one in their right mind in this environment would give a bad review to the least powerful of the group, or better yet, put their name on a list to cut as that would be career suicide.

Yet, people want to make this a male/female issue and/or attempt to move the question away from the real discussion.

  13. To further the point...it would "maybe" be different if the job existed prior to his arrival and she was in it....and somehow they dated prior to him moving to reno. But it's my understanding that she came with him and was given a job (A CREATED ONE) at the same time he started. That's a bit messy....

  14. The point is that she keeps a job that was made up simply to give her something to do while so many necessary jobs are being eliminated. It is nothing more then that.

  15. A job was created for HER when Ted Power was moved to Lafeyette Louisiana as publisher, She did not report to him, in fact I don't know who she reported to....never saw her in the two years I worked there...

  16. 6:04 that is your opinion. That simply isn't true. Get your facts straight. The job existed before she came here.

  17. WHO held the previous job and what did they do?

Be serious...she is doing whatever they can find her to do, to keep her busy and contribute whatever THAT may be...and not much from what I am told.

Her title is made up and vague. Perfect for when the next "project" comes up, needing her "expertise."

Another Gannett joke on us all.

  18. Fact:Job was created for her.
Fact:Keeps her own hours, comes and goes as he pleases
Fact:If not a Power would have been laid off long ago
Fact: Conflicts with certain key indivudals within the building

Opinion:More or less a nice lady, don't know if she is/will help or not, does have experience but wonder if she really cares.

  19. sorry meant *she and *indivduals

  20. Kathy Power was a joke in Lafayette and apparently she's still a joke now in Reno.

Nobody in our building knew what she did, nobody ever saw her, but yet she had her own office upstairs in the newsroom and presumably a nice paycheck every two weeks. Hell, the office is still there, with her name plastered on the door with some silly position title like Community Relations Coordinator.

She may have gotten into Gannett the hard way, by actually working, but I can guarantee you she's staying in Gannett the easy way - by being married to a publisher.

And don't get me started on that two-faced SOB.

Ted Power is the reason many people in Lafayette actually defend a heathen like Leslie Hurst. That's how bad HE was.

  21. I for one am not certain she ever stepped foot in the building in Lafayette (a place where, at one point at least, nepotism ran rampant). Her office was dark every single time I saw it. I did see a photo of her once...in our society magazine. At least one person I know said they'd seen her at the building...but they were guessing that the stranger they'd seen walking into Teddy's office was Kathy. Shameful...thought not her fault. If any of us found ourselves with a guaranteed paycheck we'd ride it out, too. He, however is a disgrace to the industry and a fine example of how kissing enough ass can move you up the totem pole. Reno's misfourtune was Lafayette's blessing.
