Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeletePrayers all around on this devastating day. I can only hope the powers-that-be make the right decisions, rather than the easy ones.

ReplyDeleteenough already with the building stuff.
ReplyDeleteFor those interested I spoke with someone at the un-employment office today, and was told that you can get un-employment benefits while collecting your severance. She said to apply for un-employment the day you are let go.
ReplyDeleteFOR YOU Mr.JERSEY ROCKS
9:23 ... what's the "devastating news" that deserve prayers? ... with the continuing childish comments about the darn building, this separate channel has lost its reason for being, but here's a comment that stands out there begging for some more info
ReplyDeleteWhat's a building when there is Charlie Nutt?
ReplyDeleteAny more word on NJ Today? why are so many posts removed?
ReplyDeleteThis editing is getting just as bad as Gannett itself is there no end
ReplyDeleteWhat in the name of God is going on with the newsroom people at the CN/HNT today? We sit here watching "secret" meetings and people coming and going, but the big shots must think we are all deaf, dumb and blind!!! Something is going on right before our noses!
ReplyDeleteAt the HNT today, they are deciding who will be getting jobs in Neptune and who will be let go. It's excruciating to watch people being marched into the office to find out their fate. Hope they all land on their feet at a better place than Gannett. By the way, it's only HNT people in jeopardy - CN folks all seem to be fine, once again. How's that happen?
ReplyDeleteWe don't think the CN is escaping this, but you may be correct. What was BZ doing here today? What a nice dude with the talent you could never say exist at the CN editor level!
ReplyDeleteHNT, they have taken all of the people who ruined the CN and moved them down to you. I cannot explain it, but know that it's recognized and even we find it disgusting!
All of the really good people we had were bought out or laid off.
Does Skip recognize that it's only HNT people who are getting kicked out the door again? The CN people just sit there and do their PET projects and never look worried about being unemployed because they know they have immunity. Why, I don't know. Skip should address this with his people.
ReplyDeleteSkip is the guy making the decisions. He just buys what PG wants. Skip threw in with a bad lot. He turned into Darth Vader as far as HNT is concerned. He went to the dark side and can't see past PG's memos now. PG has become the emperor. Too bad. Talent is something he finds very threatening.
ReplyDelete4:56 PM-- When someone is totally lacking in personality, writing talent, character, leadership ability, etc. that person MUST be overwhelmed working with people who have what he fails to possess. It is precisely this type of person Gannett has always sought out, promoted and put into management. Who knows, we may have the next Craig Dubow right here in NJ!!!

ReplyDeleteAny names on who was let go today?
ReplyDeleteHate to tell you, but Skip went to the dark side long before he went to the HNT. You didn't live through his reign of terror at the CP or the APP. Ask someone who did from either paper. They'll tell you. The scars he left behind will never heal.
ReplyDeleteAnyone hear anything about Tom Donovan being promoted?
ReplyDelete8:39: I worked in the newsroom with Skip when he was executive editor at the C-P and I have nothing but good things to say about him. Not all my colleagues liked him, but I did. He gave raises across the board for an underpaid newsroom, made some excellent hiring decisions, rallied the troops, and he was always passionate about beating the competition. He was an outsider, coming to us from the Associated Press.
ReplyDeleteDonovan promoted? To what? Collins' cabana boy?
ReplyDeleteWho is leaving CN/HNT/DR and who is going to Asbury?
ReplyDeleteRumor has it, he may be the next east group publisher. ????

8:39: I worked for Skip at the APP. He was the best editor I'd had in a long time. Sorry you had a bad time, but don't assume you speak for everyone.
ReplyDeleteHe's heads and shoulders above the non-entity that took his place.
I agree with 9:21 PM about Skip Hidlay. I worked with the guy and found him bright, energetic and very competitive. He did see through all the BS coming from certain folks and was not fooled for long if at all. On the other hand, he knows how the play the politics and will show his support very strongly to those above him or those who can benefit his personal agenda. A smart guy who will probably be around for awhile. Sorry we lost him at the courierpost and ended up with the idiot we have on board with us now. Oh well, Gannett must play the politically correct hand don't they?
ReplyDelete12:05 pm -- That was Skip's rep when he came to HNT and we were delighted to have someone of his reported caliber, particularly after living through the Ketan years. But he did not live up to that rep at HNT. He quickly and most decidedly disappointed almost everyone and proved incapable of making any decision that recognized talent and experience over pragmatism, BS and brown-nosing.
ReplyDeleteI echo the favorable comments about Skip. He seems to be a decent human being and a journalist with good instincts. (God help his wife and family with all the moves he's made.) I am not in management.
