Burlington grabs news of historic gay marriage vote

The Burlington Free Press is all over today's historic legislative decision, making Vermont only the fourth state to legalize gay marriage, and the first to do so with a state legislature's vote.

The paper's rolling coverage includes lots of video, too, drawing favorable notice from at least one Gannett Blog reader. "The Freep's on its game today,'' they told me in an e-mail. "Honestly, a pretty good job by those involved."

The newspaper at a glance:
  • Chairman: Jim Carey
  • Publisher: Brad Robertson
  • Executive Editor: Mike Townsend
  • Founded: 1827
  • Joined Gannett: 1971
Circulation as of Sept. 30: daily, 38,987, down 9.2% from a year before. Sunday, 46,738, down 6.4%, Deutsche Bank data show.

  1. So, a newspaper reported news?
    And then what happened?
    Were they all laid off?
    I don't get it..

  2. Jumpin jimminy...
close to 400 comments on the main story (I guess) but I can't read a single one of 'em.

  3. 400! That's a lot even considering there's more nuts that come out of the woodwork in VT than anywhere else.

  5. Did anyone (Jim) see The Des Moines Register coverage of Iowa's Supreme Court's unanimous decision of the very same issue just this past Friday?

There was coverage to consider. Over 2000 comments on the main story just the first day. Twitter hash tags (#iagaymarriage), videos, live blogging from the gay bars (yes, Iowa has gay bars) and everything.

Jim, kudos where kudos are due. Des Moines did it first, Des Moines did it bigger, Des Moines did it best.

  6. Looks like Iowa's one up on Burlington. "Pearl's", the only "gender neutral" bar in town, closed about a year back. Prior to that it was the old Top Hat where Nectar's is now.

  7. In response to DesMoines: Trying doing that in a state with just 650,000k....nice try.
