Kettle, meet pot: Neuharth on princely paychecks

Like rubbernecking past a car wreck, I can't resist octogenarian retired CEO Al Neuharth's weekly column, every Friday in USA Today.

Proving once more that Corporate America's top leaders lack even a modicum of self-awareness, our favorite $100,000-a-year-for-life consulting columnist typewrites about entertainment industry executive Joe Torre's new book, The Yankee Years. The money quote: "They paid Torre over $44 million in 12 years."

Jealous, much?

  1. "entertainment industry executive Joe Torre"

Is that a joke? Or do you seriously not realize Torre's a baseball manager?

If it's a joke, great. Not really that funny. But if it's not a joke, and it's just a simple screw-up, how do you expect to be taken seriously as ... whatever it is you think you are these days?

  2. Apparently, I must inform you of the following reality:

The New York Yankees is a large business enterprise. Torre was one its highest-paid executives. And, like all companies in the professional sports industry, it is in the business of entertaining customers.

That the Yankees are about sports is simply part of the entertainment fantasy.

  3. One question and one comment:

Isn't it time for his one week furlough?

For context and comparison sake, perhaps he could have told readers how much he's paid for writing a column where he claims someone else is overpaid.

  4. A source told me, that when I lay comments online, after little Al column. The readership numbers, of his web words go up.

  5. So you were trying to be funny. Just missed the mark.

Thanks for the clarification! Now go back to doing ... whatever it is you do these days.

  6. Oh, and here's a "reality check" for you. Baseball managers aren't executives. They aren't part of the front office here.

Here is the link for the New York Yankees' list of executives: http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/team/front_office.jsp?c_id=nyy

Go visit there, do a little research and tell me if you see the name Joe Girardi listed anywhere on there. I'll give you a hint: it's not. Who is Joe Girardi? He's the manager of the New York Yankees, the job last held by Joe Torre. He's not an executive, and neither was Torre.

That's the reality. But, reality isn't your strong suit, is it?

  7. Also, here is a link for the Los Angeles Dodgers' front office, the team Joe Torre manages for now: http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/team/front_office.jsp?c_id=la

Go visit there and see if Torre's name is listed anywhere as an executive. Again, I'll save you the time and give a hint: it's not. TORRE IS NOT AN EXECUTIVE. Trying to spin baseball as part of the "entertainment industry" isn't factual either.

Saying Jim Hopkins is a credible source of any news gathering or information service is simply part of Jim's Blogging Fantasy.

Seriously. Just do a little research next time. It's not that hard. It took all of five minutes to disprove your "following reality." But keep up the great work!

I think Jim has demonstrated time and time again that he is capable of doing research...and doing it well.

And who really cares what title Jim gives Joe Torre...we all know who Torre is...and Girardi for that matter too.

Why don't you spend your 5 minutes of research doing something for meaningful for Gannett...especailly since you must mean so much to them?

I'm a retired Gannett executive and your posts remind me why I am so happy to be retired from Gannett. I grew weary of jerks like you who think they know everything and are just the person to teach everyone else.

Now, go get your publishers car wahsed and filled up for him or her!

  9. This week South Dakota's most famous escapee -- besides Al and Tom Brokaw -- was humiliated for failing to report thousands of dollars of income. He had to decline the president's nomination to become HHS secretary and health care reform czar. Al has name-dropped his buddy into at least 6 columns just in the last two years. Not this week -- mum's the word.

  10. Can anyone comment on what insiders at USAT have thought throughout the years about having to save space for this joke of a writer? BTW, didn't KP used to ghost write for Al?

    Better done than right, huh?

"I grew weary of jerks like you who think they know everything and are just the person to teach everyone else."

You must be a joy to be around.

"And who really cares what title Jim gives Joe Torre...we all know who Torre is...and Girardi for that matter too."

Again, good attitude ... and great advice.

  12. Actually, I think this was the money quote:
"He was overrated, overpaid and sometimes overbearing."

Oh, and you spelled especially 'especailly.' So ... yeah. What is it you did again?

    "I'm a retired Gannett executive..."

Oh, that's right. You're retired! But you seem to relish following around A PLACE YOU DECIDED TO LEAVE.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
