What we say when Metromix isn't our cup of tea

"Such a well of sadness.''

  1. Cmon, Somebody post a suggestion, Cincy chicks can't be the hottest we've got? Where are the Jersey girls?

Note that the cutest guys and gals are loaded first in the Cincy site, the four-drink-cute and coyote ugly show up later in the gallery. But you look at them all the way to the end, just in case a winner pops up.

Perfect audience retention tool. Definitely should drive time on site metrics up.

  2. Is it true Gannett is entering the Metromix stuff in the Adult Video contests in Vegas next year? I'm starting to feel more like a porn provider than a journalist.

  3. Really? Why? Do you write for Metromix?

Somebody get SnoopDog on the line. Gannett needs an established face for "Newspapers Gone Wild".

Finally, an online model that has half a chance (not that we've figured out how to raise enough online sheckles to float a mom and pop soda shop, mind you).

  5. Worse, it's a well of bad information. It takes work to keep all that listy stuff accurate and up to date, and that means paid labor -- something the MMix overlords do not accept. Just like the other GCI products built around free submissions, it's unreliable.

If in fact these sites offered truly comprehensive, accurate and timely listings, they could beat the competition bloody. I search in vain for the events calendar of my dreams, but find no joy. Everyone is blinded by the same illusion that solid news can be had for free.

  6. I think it is time Corporate dropped the pretense, and just launch full-scale porn sites. Look at the Alisa statistics, and porn sites are the top dogs in getting eyeballs on the Internet today. So why all this soft-peddling on the issue. If selling sex is our future, then let us sell sex.

  7. In Wilmington, the MMX calendar is either a regurgitation of the News Journal's calendar, or stuff that looks pasted in by half-literate PR reps. It takes forever to load (a lot like the main newspaper site) and is just awful.

  10. According to Quantcast data, readership of Metromix sites is declining, not increasing. This in spite of all the pain-in-the-ass efforts we are making in finding items for these sites. It has lost its novelty. We need new ideas and a new site sense.

  11. I certainly haven't noticed much diversity on the few Metromix sites I've visited.

  12. If it's lost its appeal, it's a fad. Fads don't last long.

Now, news is another story. News never goes out of style.

It would be so nice if Gannett moved out of fad mode, and got back to reporting news.

  13. 12:02 You are so spot on you almost made me cry.

  14. Metromix numbers are declining because of lost interest, they are declining because the marketing budget was dissolved which included SEM/SEO funding. There is some really good content other than just the scantilly clad girls...and yes, take a look at the Jersey site...there are hot chicks there as well!

  15. Where's the really good content? Where's the news you can't find anywhere else? Make me a believer, please.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
