USA Today confirms International edition is kaput

The paper will stop publishing the money-losing foreign edition on Feb. 6, but is seeking partners in Europe and South America to continue running it under a license. Similar to a USA Today deal recently launched in the Caribbean, the paper would produce the articles, photos and other content, the Associated Press says. Partners would then print papers locally and sell ads themselves. USAT would get a per-copy licensing fee. "This allows us to continue our international presence under more favorable financial conditions," USA Today told the AP in a statement. Talks are continuing, the paper said, but it gave no timetable or word on prospects. USAT's statement followed a Gannett Blog post yesterday, saying the European edition was set to fold Jan. 30.

  1. Jim: Your first post on this was way off the mark. The AP story still doesn't quite have it right. Do some more reporting.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
