First Amendment at work: a $31.24 dog food bowl
Shopping for Obama inauguration memorabilia at USA Today's online store, I ran across the following: "Perfect for the pet with a hearty appetite (or large thirst), this rugged, full-sized stoneware bowl overflows with charm. With a wide diameter of 7.25" and standing a lofty 3" tall, there's more than enough room to satisfy even the biggest hunger." $25.99, plus a minimum $5.25 for shipping.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

May I be the first to say we've gone to the dogs?
ReplyDeleteIs that Obama maternity tee-shirt some kind of joke?
ReplyDeleteI could see using it as bedpan, after all stoneware is close to porcelain (and there is something that just feels right about using a Gannett branded item for that purpose). But no dog, except maybe Big Al's, deserves a $25 water bowl.
ReplyDeleteAnd the dogs can do their business on USAT after eating from a USAT bowl!
ReplyDeleteThat's the circle of life right there.
During the week of no pay... dog food tastes just like chicken.
ReplyDeleteCircle of life! I had forgotten all about that gem of an initiative, just like all the others we were told weren't a passing fad.

ReplyDeleteYou're thinking of "Moments of Life."
"Circle of life" is from "The Lion King"!
Well, Circles of Life was part of all that crap. We joked about it at our site, something about peeling away the layers to the core and crying hysterically since it really was an onion.
ReplyDeleteHere's something from Currie I dug up on the subject. It's about Real Life, Real News and is dated February 2004. (Sorry.)
"Instead, the system needs tests along the way. Ask such questions as these:
Has the story been approached so that it answers key questions of readers, questions that relate to their lives?
How does the Moments of Life aspect enter into the reporting? Has the reporter put news in the story along with recognizing the Moment of Life?
What aspect of the story is the "connector," the one point the writer is fairly certain will ring true with the readers and connect with them? Remember to look for the "connector."
What ways can a story in an "outer circle" of the Circles of Life better relate to the inner circles, especially the core circle involving an individual or the family/friends circle in which the individual will be very interested?"
Who the hell thought of this and how much is he/she getting paid for this silliness.
ReplyDeleteDid USAT do any commemorative editions or merch for Bush's inauguration in '01?
ReplyDelete5:03, Thanks for the memories. I interviewed for a job at an Ohio paper during thos years, and got the whole Circle of Life explanation from the EE. I thought he was putting me on at the time, but later realized he was totally serious. Nutty.
A family of 4 could eat out of this thing !!!
