Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Self-employment would be perfect except for two things: I don't like working alone from home (and WiFi cafes aren't the best substitute). The whole health insurance thing is going to be a total pain.
ReplyDeleteHey Jim, how does a government bailout for newspapers sound? Yeah, I know, silly. But an idea along those lines has already been published by Reuters. Here's the link: www.reuters.com/article/reutersEdge/idUSTRE4BU53T20081231?sp=true
ReplyDeleteYou just never know.
Gannett is consolidating/shutting down papers it owns in eastern Iowa, according to an Iowa blog:
ReplyDeletehttp://iowaindependent.com/10140/gannett-register-cuts-extend-into-eastern-iowa
Gannett stock at 8.4 a share today.... practically unchanged from the time of the massive layoffs of last month.
ReplyDeleteSo.....Gannett corp. bosses....
Howz that working out for you...???
RE: Jim's self employment post
ReplyDeleteI miss my former colleagues, too.
I pester them with e-mails, but it just isn't the same. And nobody asks me to tune their ukelele anymore, either.
I know getting health insurance isn't easy, but I'm finding getting signed up for Medicare B&D is a big pain, too.
I need a personal HR department!
Asheville's Adverting Director has quit to work for another paper. The Wilson Daily Times, a family-owned newspaper outside of Raleigh.
ReplyDeleteThat is great news.
Updated: Gannettoid.com
ReplyDeletePlease see if your paper's changes are included. Add them if they're not so we can complete the list.
Thanks
3:48 why does Gannettoid, have any mention of who run it? Why does the news in it seem to be, Gannett's news, that has already been release, by way of Gannet's Pr. Why does the site not have any disclaimer that Gannettoid, is not Association WITH GANNETT? Let me guess, your name is Tara, or you used to run the Gannettblogwhatsucks, web site?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if Franchise Xpress is still operating? We use to have one of the thier sales reps visit our office at least 4 times a year, but haven't seen him or heard from him recently. Just wondering if they let him go in the last round of lay-offs.
ReplyDeleteI hate to be petty (just cranky I guess), but everytime I see that picture of Charles Overby, I think he looks like a characturistically perfect Sleazy Lying Dick.....I mean that no chin makes him look like a penis.
ReplyDeleteHOW DO WE GO ABOUT GETTING DETAILED INFORMATION ON COBRA?
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS THE LAST MONTH I AM COVERED BY GANNETT AND I NEED THE CONTINUATION INFORMATION AND PAPERWORK.
5:00 PM, not petty, pretty amazing to me that someone would take his picture from the worst possible angle for someone with no chin.
ReplyDeleteI replied to an e-mail from Richard Michem, but wanted to post something so nobody thinks his point was ignored about Gannettoid.com.
ReplyDeleteFrom the e-mail reply:
-I am definitely not connected to Gannett PR and had never heard of "Gannettblogsucks" before.
-I work for Gannett (not corporate level) and am a fan of the Gannett Blog. I haven't put my name on the site because it's not about me and I don't think that matters.
-As Dec. 3 neared, I began collecting links of Gannett sites and blogs and entering "Gannett" into Google news frequently, so decided to compile everything onto a simple Web site that may interest and help others.
-I didn't think the site needed a disclaimer, but guess I'll add one so I'm not confused with Tara Connell.
-About the site containing old news, like I said, I'm compiling links and stories about the news, not making or breaking it (unless you e-mail me some). When news of papers cutting sections was being made, I started looking into that to compile which papers are making changes and how people can read about that.
I hope pages such as the list of papers reducing sections are helpful in that the information is all collected onto one page with links to other stories about it.
Jim's blog serves as the discussion about it and breaks news as people post it, but it can be hard to keep the topic's information together longer than a day or so. I wanted to make a place that keeps the highlights together.
Hope I didn't threadjack. I didn't want to come off as hiding, but I also didn't want to come off as imposing on Jim's blog.
Thanks
Anon @ 5:47 - as someone who had to wait 90 days for coverage & had to carry insurance, do yourself a favor and contact Aetna, or whoever is your current carrier, directly.
ReplyDeleteCOBRA is a massive waste of money. You can carry private insurance for a family for a lot less than COBRA premiums.
I went to this Gannettoid.com website and had high hopes for it - at first! Then I realized that it was a "pro" Gannett site basically. Oh, it gives the facts, somewhat, about Gannett.
ReplyDeleteBut if you really loath and despise this company and everyone who works for it, then this is NOT the site for you.
Sorry, but this site is a disappointment, and certainly no competition for this - the only REAL source of news - about Gannett
My first red flag of Gannettoid.com was the misspelled Cincinnati.
ReplyDeleteFor the second Friday, the real estate pull-out section is missing from my copy of CN. I always checked my city to see what was transpiring with real estate sales, but I guess that's over with.
ReplyDeleteGannettoid: Better work a little harder to compile. Most Gannett newspapers are making changes to their papers and sectioning. Your list barely scratches the surface. Do some more digging.
ReplyDelete9:57pm about C-N Real Estate section.
ReplyDeleteMaybe there was no section because the past two weeks of holidays and no realtor is going to place advertising during this time of the year and the fact that the economy is in the dumps?
Just a thought. I work at a NJ paper and RE advertising has been non-existent for the past 2 weeks.
9:57 p.m. CN never publishes it's real estate section during Christmas week & New Year's week
ReplyDeleteHey Gannettoid.
ReplyDeleteYou can search topix for Gannett and find a huge collection. Have you tried that?

ReplyDelete"ASBURY PARK PRESS" IN NEW JERSEY CUT A SECTION OUT OF TODAYS SAT. PAPER .NOT SURE IF ITS PERMANENT.
ReplyDelete2009's off to a great start financiallly: i dumped the last gannett stock (a handful of shares) from my 401(k) at a small profit. (i'm holding about 150 i bought separately when the stock was doing well -- they'll make a nice tax loss this year, just when i'll be switching to pension & soc. and if i'm lucky, i'll take less of a bath on them later than i would now. or not.)
ReplyDeleteand i figured out that in suffering a +/- 20% loss from my 401(k). i actually outperformed the dow and the market overall. do i wish i 'd put it all in money market last july? hell to the yeah, but for now at least i'm still a few thou over my wildest goal for the retirement i'd planned for 2011.
for those who are old enough to tap into their 401(k) without penalty, but not yet 70.5, if there's any way to avoid doing so now, it's worth giving extreme frugality a try instead. give your assets time to recover if at all possible, because once you make a withdrawal, you have to keep making them each year -- a truly sucky rule in times like these.
