Business Briefs: Howells to lead blog fundraising

Thurston J. and Eunice "Lovey" Wentworth Howell III have been named co-directors of the newly opened Gannett Blog Development Office, according to a press release from Publisher and Editor Jim Hopkins. The Howells, of Cashiers, N.C., and Cocoa Beach, Fla., will be responsible for all the blog's fundraising and private banking services.

Their appointment was cleared by the blog's chief ethics officer, General Counsel Selma Bouvier, after she examined Howell Industries financials under a non-disclosure agreement, Hopkins said.

I'm trying to earn $6,000 quarterly, mostly through sponsorships of $5 per reader, plus limited ad sales. Please use the "Donate" tool in the green sidebar, upper right. Or mail cash/checks payable to: Jim Hopkins, 584 Castro St. #823, San Francisco, Calif., 94114-2594.

  1. A friend I knew in college, Lisa Birnbach, wrote in her Official Preppy Handbook (1980) that the Howells were two of her favorite people.

  4. Jim, I'd like to have my contribution to Gannett Blog deducted from my bi-weekly paycheck. Can you make that happen?

  5. Will that deduction also come out during the "furlough" week?

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

  6. Maybe that is what the newspapers should do...charge $5. per quarter for people to access their online editions..I mean, why should I buy a newspaper when I can read it for free online?

    I'll send a check.s

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
