As the year closes out, this is going to be one of two shortened, holiday weeks. How's staffing where you work? And how is that affecting the quality of what you produce?
Hi Jim - Glad you're back, glad the trolls are gone, this blog is a great resource. Staffing where I work: terrible. Quality of what we produce: suffering, of course, and we hear about it from the readers all the time.
But actually, I'm writing to ask about something Gannett is doing quietly in your own backyard.
I've been wondering whats up with The Bold Italic, a features site based in San Francisco (http://thebolditalic.com.) I read on a design blog that it was a Gannett site, which seemed odd. But a check of the whois directory on the domain name shows that Gannett is indeed the owner of the domain.
6:40 a.m.: Experience shows that my posting the first comment is like revving up a party; people are more likely to start dancing after the host steps onto the floor.
Welcome back, Jim. I got laid off in July, seven months after my wife met a similar fate. Neither of us has found another job, but we have started an online-only hyperlocal paper in Englewood, Fla., and hope that might eventually allow us to draw a payheck. We've been up since late Ocotber and are still well into the red. The community is thrilled but still doesn't quite get the concept that not everything online can be free. Wish we could afford some sales people. And some writers. Check out www.EnglewoodEdge.com.
Welcome back, missed you Jim. Been visiting Gannettoid since my July layoff here in NJ. Still unemployed, my field is just about non existent. (former graphic designer at NJ paper) Still care about the good papers and people I spent 14 years with, so here I am... Again, welcome back.
Welcome back, Jim. I clicked on this site by accident in my "favorites list" in my web browser. I was surprised to find anything new here. With the coming furloughs, and who knows what else, your watchdogging should be needed.
I passed up COBRA (I chanced it... The upfront costs for my usual medical and dental visits were far less than I'd pay for insurance, anyway...). But now I'm denied insurance because of a pre-existing condition. Health-insurance reform would be great in that regard. I'm still going to cost less to most insurance companies than a lot of "healthy" people and families.

ReplyDeleteIt is the same as every year.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you feel the need to salt the blog with the first comment? why not do that in the opening post?

ReplyDeleteI'd be interested in knowing if anyone whose COBRA benefits ran out after 18 months had any problems finding new health insurance. Thanks.
