Montgomery Advertiser reduced to two sections

The Advertiser's very slimmed-down version is for Mondays and Tuesdays only, and is the latest in a series of budget-cutting moves by the Alabama state capital daily, Executive Editor Wanda Lloyd says.

  1. Coming soon, to a newspaper near you.

  2. Tracking how many of Gannett's papers shrink to two sections, cut classified, etc. may be the next thing to track.

Hard to believe that this is a long-term strategy for success. Perhaps Craid and Denise could fund a few papers on their own.

  3. Classified is a waste of trees 4 or 5 days a week. See where your real estate and auto guys still want to run, and print those days.

  4. Lansing is cutting from three to two sections, getting rid of sports.

Exactly, Jim. I bet the answer is: Nearly everyone.

My impression is that it's a corporate-wide initiative.

  6. Watch how small Gannett papers will be next week.
I hear that's when the 2-section papers will start.

Flies, spiders and other insects in the smaller Gannett markets will have reason to rejoice.

  7. And what an interesting "page" that is for "Tybee," er, Ms. Lloyd.

Is it really appropriate for the EE's official webpage at the paper to state:

On the weekends I love to: spend time with family and friends, attend church activities. If I'm watching a movie or listening to music, it's probably: gospel music

She's more than welcome to listen to anything she wants, of course. But if some other staffer said, "On the weekends I love to participate in Wiccan rituals," then that staffer probably would feel some not-so-discreet pressure to take down the text.

  8. I can see that Ms. Lloyd cares about the online product. That was her first blog entry of the month and it's a repost of her Sunday column.

  9. Really, you think it's inappropriate for an editor to disclose that she likes gospel music and goes to church? In Alabama? Surely you can find something more important to worry about.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
