Exclusive: More intercepted e-mail to the CFO!

RE: Another excellent idea from a loyal employee

Let's turn Christmas into a Gannett loyalty test. How? Offer Corporate staff three choices for a company-paid holiday gift:
Everyone who picks the endowed chair keeps their job -- for now.

P.S.: After all you've sacrificed for this wonderful company, I am shocked -- shocked! -- that the Gannett Foundation refuses to pay for all the X-mas gifts you told me to buy for your family at Tysons Galleria mall. How in the name of double-digit profit margins is that "not investing in the future of the communities in which Gannett does business?" Is the mall not a Gannett community???!!!

Stop Burns now!
I'm trying to earn $6,000 quarterly, through advertising and voluntary subscriptions of $5 per reader. With just 23 days left in the current quarter, I've raised $3,947 -- 66% of my goal. The breakdown:
  • Advertising: $1,142
  • Subscriptions: $2,805

  1. They miss you at the Thomas Pink store in the Galleria.

  2. This is a really dumb posting at a time when people are looking here for real information about their own futures.

  3. 5:05 pm: It's probably never a good time to ask people to consider paying me for all the work I do on this blog. But if I don't remind readers now and then, I'll have no income, and then . . .

I couldn't agree more. What's the point other than to use an ugly photo to pander for money? Give me something substantial. If you do, you won't need to advertise to get my greenbacks.

  7. 7:43 pm: You are a tough reader to please. In the past week, I reported extensively on Gannett's layoffs; more examples of Gannett Foundation giving that favors top executives, plus details on the company's newspaper profit margins. How do you define "substantial?"

  8. FORK IT UP PEOPLE. Five bucks is nothing for what you're getting. In fact, fork over more than five bucks...c'mon.

  9. We're almost there. C'mon, folks. I was laid off in this whole mayhem and I sent Jim $20. I'll be sending him more next quarter. He puts a ton of time and effort into this (just ask Sparky). Jim's earned it.

    Lighten up, Francis.

Even the mayor of New York eventually said it was ok to laugh after 9/11.

So you have shared info other posters have given you; however, numbers from all around don't really mean much to me unless I'm one of them and then it's history.

The foundation stories were actually interesting. Kudos on that. I wish I could do something in reaction but I don't know what.

As far as newspaper profit margins, while I'm sure it was a great deal of work this is all extremely old news from 2007 and readers are taking it at face value to represent today. Moreover, you didn't compare apples to apples. Ad revenue against payroll doesn't tell the whole picture, only bottom line totals for all revenue and all expenses tells that story and must include any shared resources not part of the equatiom. I actually think reporting the old fincancial information actually did a dis-service by getting people riled up over such outdated information.

That's my two cents on the subject. Sorry. Anyway, I can get it free from the internet...

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
