Layoffs: Spreading like wildfire, a don't-miss post
In an unusual spike in traffic, more than 1,700 of you have now clicked on my post about CEO Craig Dubow raising the specter of layoffs, since I first published the item on Saturday.

With the Gannett ostrisch head in the sand attitude from get go, why wouldn't lay-off's be necessary. Wait til the last minute to fix anything, and most likely you will find yourself elimenating instead of previous neccessary repair. GCI is in a tail spin and will drop even further as GCI stock as company match is refused by empolyee's through their 401K's.

ReplyDelete7:36 normally I would just agree but there is not a company in the U.S. who will avoid cut backs in staff, marketing, whatever they can cut in the next few months. Suddenly, Gannett is not alone. All of America is now faced with the same issues.
ReplyDelete8:28 Gannett is devoid of conscience. They write termination papers in crypt-deqoute to avoid uneployment penalties. This company is so mismanaged, it's surpising they can put the right date on the paper. The internet is doomed with Pointroll.
ReplyDeleteLook at all the posted jobs for Gannett. That certainly doesn't look like a company that's getting ready for layoffs. Further, had I beend laid off, only to find a job similar to mine posted, I'd be furious enough to take immediate legal action.
ReplyDeleteI think that, in some cases, they keep jobs posted even though they can't hire anyone due to a freeze.

ReplyDeleteNine new jobs posted today (U.S. Community Newspapers only), thirteen yesterday....the list goes on and on.
ReplyDeleteThe Journal News just hired three people in the news department. I don't think layoffs are in the works. If someone has other news, I'd like to hear it.
ReplyDeleteWell, Dubow said on Friday in Louisville that there will be more layoffs. I heard it with my own two ears. Perhaps he was lying?
ReplyDeleteI second what 10:41 said, I heard Dubow with my own two ears say there would be more layoffs. And I also understood him to be saying they would occur before the end of this year.
ReplyDeleteDon't fool yourselves. Layoffs are coming. From where is anyone's guess, though.
Anyone care to make aneducated guess?
9:49: Even if layoffs are coming, that doesn't mean hiring stops in the company. Just like capital projects have to continue so the buildings don't fall down around us. Gannett still has to continue with its mission. Layoffs help it toward the goal in the end (whatever it may be), and that combined with hiring allows management to tweak resources to needs - financially AND strategically.

ReplyDeleteI have a problem with them not using job performace as a factor. You should weed out the bad apples if you must lay off!!! I watched them lay off a hard working director.

And did you happen to hear from where might be they cutting?
Since the first round was peons, the second round was directors, I'd say the next round will be middle management. Lot of fat there.
ReplyDeleteOf course an operation run by bean counters is continuing to hire. First they get rid of 50-year-olds making $60,000 and four weeks of vacation a year, then replace a few of them with 20-year-olds making $30,000 and no vacation a year and who are expected to have "experience" and who will likely have to do not only their primary job but those of bygone workers whose jobs were eliminated as well as duties yet to be assigned for no additional pay. Too bad they don't see the wisdom of this for their top execs. Experienced execs can be had pretty cheap right now.

ReplyDeletenewsroom folks at one east coast site are being told only cuts expected in the near future are non-payroll items.
