Perhaps it's an effort to give your blog some personality, but I can't really understand why I should give a shit what you're doing right now. When you're in senior management at Gannett, let me know. I may begin to care at that point.
ReplyDelete8:02 AM Hi Jim! Many of us love getting the little snapshots of your time in Ibiza. To 8:02 a.m, don't read them if you don't like them. I enjoy the little insights and think many of us are jealous because Jim is actually living a life the rest of us dream.
ReplyDeleteMy only questions is why would Jim, who has no kids to support and clearly is living on his Gannett buy- out money, want to spend every day in the drudgery of other people getting laid off.

I found reading other people's comments has helped me heal and move on. I don't feel so alone. I don't come to this site as often as I did when I was first laid off, but when I do, it acts as confirmation that I am much better off without the Big G hanging over my head. Each day gets a little brighter.
ReplyDeleteThis blog makes me realize why I had an increasing sense of dread in my last years at a Jersey paper. One EE said our agenda was to write about what our readers do - eat, work, shop, play. "Think" was not on the list.
ReplyDeleteAlso now the reason why I felt evaluations were hollow is revealed - they were empty exercises manipulated by the bosses. Way before Oprah blew out her thyroid from stress, I busted mine from constant anxiety over how to do all my work plus cop runs after the cop reporter quit. Later, all cop runs were just dropped, but I'm still taking thyroid pills for life.

I only occasionally go off-topic like this for a couple reasons. It gives me a much-needed break from an often-depressing subject. It provides fresh, original content. And it allows me to take advantage of my photo skills. I try to not to do this too often, however, since this is a blog about Gannett.

ReplyDeletePS Thank you for this G blog. If I had had it before I quit last year, I might could have hung on a little longer. Like someone wrote earlier, I find comfort here, too. I'm still bitter about how and why I left, so it helps. Plus, I miss the newsroom vibe, nothing like it, and this gets me near it, if only for a while.

I worked for a Gannett newspaper for eight years and have been gone for almost one. For about the first six years it was a nice company to work for; on the whole the local atmosphere was good and the Corporate folks that I dealt with were nice. I went to McLean a couple of times and generally liked what I saw.
The last couple of years, though, were just one financial squeeze after another and one bad advertising or circulation initiative after another. My paper was one of the first to have the "group" style management that is happening now, and it was a disaster in my (and others') opinion.
I do hope that Gannett survives, as I think legitimate news media is vitally important, especially in this age of the internet and (almost worthless) user-generated content. I just hope that someone at Corporate can do something before the company implodes.
What I'm doing now...contemplating taking a piss. There you go, Jim. Enjoy the turnabout.
ReplyDelete9:42 must be stuck in the second grade. Why any educated, mature person would post a comment like that is beyond me. Oh I get it they are peeing in a cup at a local hospital getting checked for what has been causing their weird behavior. My god he/she has dragged me down to their level.
ReplyDeleteSee what happens when all we do is stare at the four walls of a windowless newsroom/office/cubicle? People get cranky and forget what the world looks like.
