Adult toys: What does your big boss drive?

When a publisher recently got a new company-paid 'green' car, a reader wondered whether other top executives were switching to more energy-efficient models -- or sticking with their favorite gas guzzler.

Following the example below, please provide this information about your publisher or station manager's company-furnished car:
  • Make: Cadillac
  • Model: STS
  • Age (approx. years): 1
  • Does the boss gas up for free at the company pump?

  1. Our GM doesn't have a car the company pays for, to the best of my knowledge. I believe it is a used BMW SUV -- I forget what the model number is. It's about three years old; he's had it since I've worked here.

I work for the largest Gannett TV station in the southeast by market size.

  2. My AME drives an old, red Chevy Cavalier with a lot of body dings. I scream with laughter every time I see it.

  3. In Palm Springs:
    Make: BMW
    Model: X3
Age: 3 or 4 years old
Yes, the publisher gets free gas and car washes.

  4. FYI, BMW X3's are very expensive, usually up towards 50k. and gas mileage is not great.

    Chrysler
    300 - loaded
2 years total: bought new and used by publisher for one year, then publisher left and 1 year sitting in parking lot
    free gas

When publisher left, new GM turned down company car and used own car to save expense; after just a few months the big cuts started coming down and new GM left Gannett. Now the Chrysler has been sitting in parking lot for more than a year.

  5. I don't know if Brevard's publisher is supplied a vehicle.

I do know we still buy Big Al a new Cadillac Escalade every few years.

  6. I normally find this site informative and interesting.

    But to this: Who cares?

  7. Who cares?

Why would the highest paid employee get free shit? Shouldn't he just ask for more money and pay for it himself?

    Infiniti - M Series

    They start around 43K

Not sure on year but not more than a few years old....

  9. It's not an issue of significance; it is about appropriateness and appearance. It's about stretch limos at board meetings; it's about getting weekend tans using the GCI jet; it's about giving pubs free gas and a bimmer and paying employees 28-cents a mile; it's about not being able to file a story because your 4 year old laptop handed down from advertising won't boot. It's about getting rid of older employees and those with chronic diseases and replacing them with $33K wonders. That my friends, is what it is all about.

  10. There are no stretch limos at board meetings.

  11. Thank you, 10:57, for writing the funniest thing I've read in days.

The sad thing is I bet that non-critical, unintuitive, straitjacketed literal thinking has gotten you pretty far up the ladder, hasn't it?

  12. When Christine Chin came to Fort Collins two or three years ago, she brought her own dinged up station wagon.

When Kim Roegner came in a few months ago, she got a brand new Infiniti. The invoice was sent to my office by accident and the company paid $43K for it.

    Way to cut costs, Kim.

  13. I am a publisher, and I get no free gas from my company (!) nor does the company provide me with a vehicle. If anyone cares, I drive a 2001 Honda CRV. Not all newspaper companies give out car and gas perks to publishers. Some of us work for a living.

  14. Back when Corporate provided a Mercedes Benz for each of the really big boys, one of them allowed their kid to drive it - and it was totaled. No biggy, just buy another!
