Rochester union said finally winning new contract

The Newspaper Guild says: "After nearly 16 years of difficult and sometimes stalled negotiations the union that represents approximately 90 reporters, photographers, copy editors, multi-media journalists and artists at the Democrat and Chronicle reached a new labor agreement with the newspaper’s parent company."

  1. Does this have anything to do with Rochester's publisher going to the Indianapolis Star? Is that why an agreement was finally reached? Rochester people, was he hostile to the union?

  2. Jim,
Since you closed the commenting on the blogs, people have become disinterested. Notice how little people are responding today.

You have to choose between being an "open blog" or a closed "censored" blog.

You have to decide what role YOU are going to play. Moderator makes this blog boring. It is a BLOG, get over it. You are no better than the Gannett executives censoring what they say and do!

  4. Talk about hating a company? Unions sources I'll talk to, really hate Gannett. If you notice Gannett's buying habits, when they had money> You will notice that a lot of papers they bought did not have unions. I know of one case, were employees were threaten to be fired if they even talked about unions.

  5. It doesn't matter to Gannett if there is a contract with a Union. Look what they did in Morristown. The contract with the pressroom had been signed 3 months before Gannett announced they were closing the shop. If I were in Rochester, I'd be expecting the worst.

  6. Has anyone bothered to read the final agreement? These guys were negotiating for 16 years and the Guild gave up everything! Members pay union dues for this. They didn't get one benefit that is an advantage over non union employees. Not one! Oh my gosh. You kool aid drinking lemmings better wake up. 16 years and this is what you are celebrating?

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
