Long-time Florida Today Managing Editor Bob Stover (left) was named the paper's top editor today. He replaces Terry Eberle -- who recently took the top newsroom post at The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla. So does this post now become the one where can discuss whatever evil must have been lurking in Ark that caused you to close comments on the Gazette post recently? Who was doing whom?
ReplyDelete@9:11 a.m. Please don't do that here, either. I hated to do it, but I continue to fear libelous speculation on that earlier post. As much as possible, I want to keep all comments open -- but I'll go back to moderating them all, if necessary. And I don't think most readers would want that.

ReplyDeleteI have nothing to share. I just thought it odd that YOU would bring up the subject, then not allow comments. You seem to have no problem making on the edge comments about some - BHenry comes to mind - or allowing readers to give similar treatment to others. You went, more than once, on a fishing expedition about the apparent dirty or scandalous dealings that did in that pub in Jersey. So, I am fishing, too. (Oh, and save your breath. I know you delete some comments. I liked, in particular, the time you deleted one and then, in your own comment, admonished readers not to use the word "bitch." Wonder what the deleted comment said, wink-wink, nod-nod.)
ReplyDeleteYou give the Gannett flak repeated floggings for failing to answer questions. So, I am asking YOU: what's with all the trepidation surrounding Ark.? It was a major GCI event, and given the rise of some of the players - which YOU brought up - seems worth a comprehensive airing. And why is it OK to allow public beatings for some, and then go all noble over some Gazette doings? Or are you simply protecting friends?
@1:09 p.m.: I will tell you this much: There were rumors in the Little Rock business community about hijinks in The Arkansas Gazette's executive suite. I don't know whether any of the rumors were true, although I personally saw things suggesting they had some basis in fact.
ReplyDeleteLittle Rock was a smallish Bible-belt city, and many influential people in the business community believed the rumors were true. That impacted the paper's ability to compete against the locally-owned Arkansas Democrat. So, in the end, the rumors -- and the Gazette's inability to deal with them effectively -- played a role in the paper's death.
Huh. Working at the Democrat, I don't recall ever hearing a thing. For that matter, this is the first I've heard of it .. whatever "it" might be.

Bob is a classy, caring guy who gave me more valuable feedback on my work in 26 months than I received from dozens of other editors over 15 years. He's good at what he does and great at helping young reporters take that proverbial "next step."
