Earlier: Terry Eberle leaves the top editor's job at Florida Today to lead the newsroom at the up-and-coming News-Press on Florida's Gulf Coast, the Fort Myers paper is now reporting. He replaces Kate Marymont, recently promoted to Corporate's News Department. Short iPhone post; will update. (Florida Today's story is now up.)

News-Press people already know about Eberle. He was the editor in Fort Myers from 1996-2001.

ReplyDeleteI would encourage promoting Silverman to Eberle's post just to get him out of Nashville, but I wouldn't wish that on a worst enemy, much less another journalist.
ReplyDeleteThis definitely is a loss for Brevard. Terry is a passionate, hard-working and talented journalist who cares deeply about the news. Not enough like him left in the editors' ranks these days.
ReplyDeleteI've had the pleasure of working for him and he's one of the few things I miss about not being in the business any longer.
Terry got hustled out of Indianapolis and back to Florida when Barbara Henry arrived there.
ReplyDeleteActually, Henry hired Terry, though I'm not sure he was her first choice (I think it was Ryerson).
ReplyDeleteThe fact of the matter is that Henry pushed Eberle out - like she did so many others - for reasons that defy logic. The paper was just starting to hit stride when Henry turned on the newsroom (not coinicidentally about the time that Nancy Winkley - Henry's close friend - abruptly left the paper when she wasn't automatically promoted to ME when the position became vacant).
Eberle fought the good fight as long as he could before being offered a way out of a no-win situation.
Just another proud moment in the glorious Barbara Henry era at the Indy Star.

Florida Today employees have been coasting for too many years under the leadership of a warm, sensitive editor with a sense of humor. They need a ruthless Gannettoid who can come back and instill fear and lower morale. That is the only way that newspaper will truly survive.
ReplyDeleteEberle is a class act. Many Gannett editors at larger papers won't give the time of day to editors at smaller papers. Eberle treated all as equals and was always willing to share advice. He doesn't lead with his ego like many in top editing ranks at Gannett metros do. His record at Florida Today is a good one. He's one of the best editors in the company -- part of a cadre of quality folks that is diminishing in numbers by the day.
ReplyDeleteI haven't worked with Terry in years, I heartily agree with the comments made here. He is one of the best I ever worked with. He's passionate, smart, funny and caring. He treats you as an individual, not just someone filling a seat in his newsroom. The News-Press is lucky to have him back. Terry is an old-style editor who has kept his values but is succcesfully navigating the changing newspaper world.
