Hearst Magazines President Cathie Black (left), a former USA Today publisher, may be an internal candidate to succeed suddenly-on-the-street Victor Ganzi, The Wall Street Journal says today.Ganzi quit as president and CEO of Hearst Corp. yesterday, "after clashing with trustees of the Hearst family over the print and TV media empire's strategic direction," the WSJ says.
Black's "solid reputation in magazine publishing was tarnished after the collapse in 2002 of Tina Brown's Talk magazine," the WSJ says. Still, she led the launch of O, The Oprah Magazine -- one of the most successful magazine start-ups ever.
New York-based Hearst also owns newspapers including the money-losing San Francisco Chronicle, now run by former Gannett executive Frank Vega and Editor Ward Bushee, who fled The Arizona Republic's newsroom in January.
