  4. Did the USA TODAY reporters who went to the White House Correspondent's Dinner get drunk? Why does USA TODAY carry an AP report on the dinner? I saw the USA TODAY reporters there. So we spent all our furlough money on attending this extravaganza, and for the Hollywood stars to be our guests, and yet no one from USA TODAY bothered to write a story for the price of their ticket?

  5. We spend all this money and they didn't write a word? This is one of those "let 'em eat cake" moments at this operation. WOW. What disdain do these people hold for us to waste this money in this fashion?

  6. Any word on more furloughs for the third quarter?

  7. Furloughs will continue in the 3rd quarter.

Prove it. Big mouth no it all. Prove it. Evidence. Something besides wild speculation or are you a troll?

  9. 9:13 Easy. Look at the economy. There may be a bottom forming, but we are still in the downward cycle or maybe leveling out. That means revenues are not going improving. Read the recent reports by other newspaper execs, and you see this. So we are looking at maintaining the status quo, and that means furloughs will continue because they will not have the $22 million needed to return to full salaries.

  10. 3rdQ will include furloughs and another fairly large layoff mostly from non-newsroom.

That's not proof. It is your opinion of things you have looked at and slanted by your negative view of the world. You also mention status quo ut there is no basis for that other than what was done for two quarters. That doesn't make status quo. I've heard other executives discuss how some areas of advertising are getting better.

Your opinion is no better than mine and I say there will be no Q3 furlough and probably no Q4 either.

Prove me wrong with evidence, something other than your "the sky is falling" mentality.

  15. Corporate needs the $22 million to pay off expense accounts, like the $200-a-ticket White House Correspondent's Dinner, and associated expenses for dinners and hotels for Hollywood guests and favored advertisers.

  16. My guess is "corporate" didn't know there was an event.

10:32: Breathlessly awaiting the evidence to support your position that Gannett is going to change direction in the 3Q. Since you’re evidence-obsessed, I’m sure you wouldn’t post a Pollyanna opinion without documentation. Share it, please.

Will noogies and wedgies soon be involved?

  23. 10:32: You've already convinced me that those with whom you quarrel have mere logical opinions. You also have convinced me that they have no hard evidence. All that can be done now is to hope that you will enlighten us with proof of your cheery opinion that the company is not going to continue on its present course. Please don't make us beg.

  24. Believe furloughs will continue with the goal being an 8-10% labor cost savings for the year. Collective bargaining groups were hit with 10% pay roll backs guaranteed for 2 years. Non-represented will give back via furlough. 10% cut equals about 200 hours or 4-5 weeks.

  26. You can look at the economy in a bad way or not.

Every day we read better and better things. I've heard the USA TODAY advertising has suddenly become much brighter. I dropped some cash back in the S&P 500 in my 401 and it has earned a tidy sum over the past four weeks. Gannett stock is even up. It's all perception and I chose to look at a glass half full these days.

Someone said we should be looking at an 6010% cut for the year. Well, the two furloughs already taken equal a little over 4%. Higher salaried employees are taking two furloughs in Q2 so I don't know how muc that adds up. A pay feeze adds another 3-4%. We are already safely at at least 8%. Summer will be tough with vacations so I don't see any there. Q4 is always upbeat and I expect the economy will be showing even more signs of slow improvement. The fact that the bottom has been reached and we might even be on a slow rise means to me that we've done enough.

I'm sick of doom and gloom. It does me no good and the gloom is usually much brighter than I expect. I won't live my life fearfull and miss things. I'll be prepared for doom but live in the sunshine.

  27. Time for an update...
Would like to knwo the following:
    1. Latest on Ihne and Asheville?
    2. Latest on consolidated operations like copy desks.
    3. Will Gannett consolidate adv call centers anymore?
    4. What other print facilities are being combined and/or are there any press expansions?
    5. What about Kindle and USAT. Terrible idea or genius?
    6. What are the trends on adv rev at individual properties.. Do any show signs of turnaround?
    7. Heard we are willing to sell the two smaller Florida papers to other groups.

  28. Regarding furloughs. between layoffs and furloughs, Gannett has saved a lot of money improving the bottom line. If the economy doesn't improve in Q3 & 4 how would Gannett or any company continue the current trend without more of the same?

Plus, Gannett won't allow YOY increases in expenses clearly suggesting the current and past furloughs must continue regardless of profits (especially if they don't improve).

  29. Nothing surprises me anymore at USA TODAY. Terrible place to work for most. Wasteful. Inefficient. Bloated in some areas, way understaffed in others. A small percentage have it good (the teacher's pet types), but for most, it's just a rotten place to have to ride out the recession. All the wrong people rewarded for all the wrong reasons. I can't wait to find another job once this economy picks up. Nice building and other amenities here, but just no substance, accountability or honesty. Everything is a game. I get tired of the lies. It's so bad that I think the liars now think they are actually telling the truth. Some sort of odd O.J. Simpson syndrome where deceit because so common that it's hard to tell the difference between right and wrong, spinning and true beliefs. The selfishness is off the charts here, as is the backstabbing.

You are assuming the furloughs were there to only support Q1 and Q2. Perhaps there was a longer term strategy to help Q3 and Q4. After all, it didn't take a scientist to figure out things would still be pretty bad for a while.

The grass is always greener on the other side?? You could be describing portions of almost any company. All comanies are alike. They are in business to make money. Even non-profits. You'll be ssadly urprised at what you'll find elsewhere.

  34. There may be no furloughs in advertising in Q3 and Q4 because it use to be a busy season for the papers. We'll see this year--nothing can be predicted as it is changing (collapsing) rapidly.
