FAQs About Me: How long I'll edit Gannett Blog

First in a series of occasional Q&As about yours truly.

Q. How long are you going to keep blogging about Gannett?
A. I don't know. I wrote once that I expected Gannett Blog to run just two or three years. (Here's why.) I'm well into year two.

I am, as I remind Sparky, differently employed. This is a fancy way of saying I blog and goof off. Under the terms of my USA Today buyout, Gannett will pay me severance through mid-October. Until then, Sparky and I will study Spanish, a skill I'll likely need when I figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, I can blog from anywhere -- including Spain, where we'll be living this summer.

  1. Jim, I hope that you keep this going as long as possible. Someone though will have to take the lead on trying to reverse the "contagion" of grief hitting the industry. Hitting maximum inertia here will help or critical mass, etc.

I'm on the outside. I am just saddened by all the talent being let go...years of service thrown down the drain. Not just Gannett either.

Cutting expenses by 9% in '07 by McClatchy earned Pruitt a bonus but for what? The stock still sucks and will for the year.

Maybe some letter-writing to the Board of Directors...and some decent "stand-up" editorials for once by member newspapers.

Sad that newspapers themselves are as myopic as some of the leaders that they interview.

They cut expenses...and keep telling their retailers not to cut their budgets.

What bullshit in our transparent world.

  2. Hey, Jim -- keep it going as long as possible. A great outlet. Also, you might consider doing a follow-up in another month or two to see where USAT's bought-out folks (for that matter, any and all buyout'ers elsewhere in Gannett, too) are ending up. It might make an interesting life-after-newspapers tableau ...

    paddyo'

For instance, I just got an e-mail yesterday from an ex-colleague of ours that one of the best folks to leave USAT in the December buyout, Richard Willing, recently took a new job as director of public affairs for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Mike McConnell

Anyway, keep up the good work

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
