Like rubbernecking past a car wreck, I can't resist octogenarian retired CEO Al Neuharth's weekly column every Friday in USA Today.
Our South Dakota farm boy turned media mogul says last night's Iowa presidential caucuses are way overrated. "I have nothing against Iowans,'' Neuharth sniffs this morning. "They're good, hard-working, mostly modest folks much like their neighbors in my native South Dakota. But Iowa's population of close to 3 million is less than 1% of the USA's."
And then there's New Hampshire, a state with even fewer residents: 1.3 million. "But some of them are a little impertinent,'' Neuharth huffs. "When I visited there during my 50-state BusCapade, I asked then-governor John Sununu whether he thought it fair his little state had so much political clout. His cheeky reply: 'I've just assumed that's the way God intended it to be!'"
(Note to younger Gannett employees wondering: BusCapade? Take my word for it: Don't ask. And I won't even go near JetCapade!)
In any case: Neuharth knows a thing or two about cheekiness. See you next week, Big Al!

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
