I'd love to see Gannett hook up...
. . . in a big digital deal, that is. But I'm not seeing the company mentioned as a would-be suitor in this New York Times story about the corporate parent of Jewish dating site JDate putting itself up for sale. Spark Networks -- which owns dozens of other personals sites aimed at religious, ethnic and other special interests -- is in early talks with possible bidders including Yahoo; eHarmony; IAC/InterActiveCorp (owner of Match.com), and MySpace, part of News Corp., the NYT says. Gannett's last digital deal was in October, when it bought a controlling stake for an undisclosed sum in the company that runs HighSchoolSports.net. It also sells scheduling software to high school athletics directors. But that seems like pretty small potatoes alongside deals like Rupert Murdoch's canny $580 million purchase of MySpace in July 2005.

Gannett already is an eHarmony partner/investor, isn't it?
