Gannett Blog traffic stats are private again
D'oh! A reader points out (see comment, below) that making some of these statistics public could dissuade people from coming here. Dumb move, Hopkins! So I've made my Site Meter traffic figures private once more. Site Meter is one of three web analytics software programs I use to track readership as I aim to improve this blog.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

ReplyDeleteAccess to your stats helps to identify who shared what on your blog. Too bad as insiders will obviously share less with you now, if at all.
D'oh! Good point! I've made them private again, and I'll now update the post.

ReplyDeleteHow so? I didn't see what stats you were publishing other than the visitor count, but how can your web analytics software identify "who shared what on your blog"?
If you poked deep enough in the stats page, you could see IP addresses. I suppose someone might figure out a way to track someone down through those, so I'm erring on the side of caution.
