Web rankings shift: USA Today, Phoenix gain

USA Today reclaimed the No. 2 spot, pushing the Washington Post back down to No. 3, among the most-read newspaper websites last month, Editor & Publisher said today. Meanwhile, the Arizona Republic's AZcentral.com was tops in the most time spent among the top 30 sites, the trade publication said.

The new top five, based on unique audience and time spent per person per month (hours:minutes:seconds):

  • New York Times: 17.5 million -- 0:34:53
  • USA Today: 9.5 million -- 0:16:13
  • Washington Post: 8.7 million -- 0:17:22
  • Wall Street Journal: 5.9 million -- 0:14:19
  • Los Angeles Times: 5.8 million -- 0:09:51
And AZcentral: 2.1 million -- 0:39:16. Needless to say, USA Today and the Republic needed some good news!

Of course, all these rankings are subject to big changes when News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch takes control of Dow Jones & Co. and makes its Wall Street Journal website free again. Murdoch said yesterday that he's aiming for an audience of up to 15 million readers.
