I saw in the Asbury Park Press this Sunday and again today that the “more” started with added pages from USA Today, not much from local however.
ReplyDeleteI can’t help but wonder if they told the advertising department this was going to happen because the ad count didn’t seem to reflect any big kick off for a project which is suppose to save print.
The gains in advertising will come from USA Today, not the local markets. Supposedly, with all this extra distribution, they can sell scale to national advertisers.

DeleteThe butterfly section has very little advertising day to day. Perhaps this will change when all 35 papers come on board, but I doubt it. I think they hope that local advertising will increase when people see all this "more" they are getting. I doubt that too.
DeleteIt has very little to do with local news either. The direction from the top is constantly changing. Staff at Asbury is never informed of the changes in direction until you go in a different direction. Ageism and favoritism is rampant. The APP is in a death spiral.
DeleteI found this site while searching for local media for an ad campaign I am planning, and while I am not a Gannett employee I have to add my take to these comments and this company.
ReplyDeleteI've advertised in Gannett papers in NE Wisconsin before, but don't anymore as I have watched local content I care about drop to nothing while there is an emphasis on USA Today, videos and reader submissions. I don't see the paper in businesses I deal with anymore, and would suspect their circulation is down 25% or more.
When other businesses see sales drop they promote more and cut prices or give incentives. My ad rep just wanted to push web ads, and special sections I used to use are no more.
There are a lot of other places that will take my advertising dollar and, I think, give me better results.
I see my area's weekly papers doing so much better because the local advertisers cannot afford my Gannett paper's ads. I was at a salon that opened recently and the owner said the cost was so prohibitive that she wouldn't bother. There are no outlets (i.e. the small local sections papers used to offer) for them to afford to buy ad space in that they're turning, with success, to local weeklies, which also is becoming the only place for local features and news
DeleteTO 12:43: As a recently laid-off journalist with way more than two decades' experience, I wish the company could hear you and maybe we'd all still be turning out good journalism and successful ad campaigns. Seems to me that management at all papers are just trying to ride that train with their fat salaries until lit goes off the rails. They've been throwing us regular employees out of the cars for years now, and the latest "More" campaign is the emperor's new clothes.

DeleteCan anybody say Fluff ? Although the Usa pages are cool and I have to agree, the paper does have more to offer over all. There is still not of local news and you need beat reporters for that. Gannett is not paying for that,so bottom line is regional fluff that you can get on your local cable station or on-line. The next step is an increase in price? If your putting more pages in your paper, that means your using more ink and newsprint? Let me guess, maybe a clever way to move people to Digital at a more reasonable price. Can anyone, who is involved in this so called Butterfly Project, tell us if the price of the paper has gone up in their region? It's gotta happen eventually, so says common sense!

DeletePost-Crescent subscription prices? They sent out letters late last year to subscribers on a week-by-week basis letting them know the price was going up in 2014.

When national and international news was cut, we were told it's a commodity, out everyone. So now it's being restored via the Butterfly.

PNJ.com also posted an AP story that said "Seattle headed to team's first Super Bowl". Both the headline and the story got it wrong -- the Seahawks played in Super Bowl 40 in 2006.

Neither do most companies. In fact, the New York City subway system ran a normal weekday schedule yesterday.

DeleteMy advice to any person who hates going to work at GCI on a daily basis, get out, the jobs are out their. I left and I feel great, best in years, I no longer have to deal with the politics, poor managers, workers who dont care, high health costs, you name it, I do not have to deal with it any longer. I am very happy and I may not be pulling in 50k a year, but it's not all about the money folks...Get out, you can, I have been a 30 year employee with this heartless company. I am gone and I feel free, o free at last. Better do it while your young and enjoy life and not suffer for the corp. dollar. It is not worth your health and sanity

ReplyDeleteHerd it hear first, it is official come Friday of this week. The Indy Star will produce a state Edition, The Lafayette plant will remain open until it farms out what little commercial they have left. Word is the Community Press paper they print weekly will be printed in Columbus, Ohio, As far as the Thrifty Nickel product, The Star will take over the printing of these Pubs. Good luck in Lafayette, More pressman to loose jobs, no many, sense thet have only 8 or so pressman, but to Gannett, this helps the bottom line. The building will be going on the market within the next month or so, and the Berliner Press may be moved to Palm Springs. This word comes down from Dale Carpenter, Director of National Printing for gps. Mr Bolger was instrumental in this move along with Travis Komidar who is the General Manger of this GPS Division. The Press was going to go to Rochester, but Gannett did not want to spend additional funds for expanding that production Center.
