Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

DeleteA fairly typical piece of sloppy USA Today/Florida Today reporting made Gawker this morning. http://gawker.com/who-really-believes-syria-is-part-of-a-biblical-end-tim-1277243954
ReplyDeletePersonally, I won't believe in the end times until USAT does an infographic on what the name of the beast is.
This is the downside of relying on the community newspapers to produce editorial that's competitive with The New York Times and other quality media.
DeleteA couple of Gawker commenters aren't sold on USA Today's brand of "journalism." Here's an example:
DeletePeople are stupid and narcissistic. Of course they believe that there is some sort of biblical apocalypse and obviously it will happen during their lifetime because they are so important. Thanks for breaking this story USA Today, you truly are, TV news in print.
Too bad for 2:01 that many religions, even those with pagan gods, believe in the apocalypse.
DeleteThere is no THE apocalypse -- there are many apocalypses. People have been expecting the end for thousands of years. I assume one of these centuries they'll be right.
DeleteMy apologies if someone has already posted this. It's from a 9.6.13 posting on the Editor and Publisher website. Part of an article, "10 Women to Watch."
ReplyDeleteHere is a portion of the Q and A with Gracia C. Gartore:
"If you had a crystal ball, what industry questions would you want answered? I have many, many questions. The most obvious is: What will be the hottest consumer trends in media consumption in the next 5-10-15 years? What devices will people gravitate to and what kind of content will they want? If someone could tell me that with 100 percent certainty, I would be a happy woman. Then what would follow from that is: What would be the most successful revenue models related to those consumer trends? Competition for revenue is being waged on many fronts today and I’m sure that will continue to accelerate in the years ahead."
Wouldn't the easier answer be to do like any company that has been successful in recent years and adapt quickly to the changing media habits. The way to do that is to keep the competent people employed and make changes quickly.
DeleteTranslation: i have no clue except "cost containment."
ReplyDeleteElsewhere within Gannett, a TV reporter didn't have a clue. WMAZ in Macon went to Randall Savage for a live report and his plaintive cry went out live.
ReplyDelete"I'm on? Now?"
Just told there will be an "emergency" Operating Committee work session tomorrow morning at 9. Q4 is looking even worse than expected and 2014 budget is looking horrible even before the numbers arrive from group. We've been told to put our "think outside the box" caps on. But, no, the discussion won't be about the fake revenue initiatives we usually place on spreadsheets. We will be talking about what more we can cut. Cut, cut, cut.
ReplyDeleteI believe you mean the expectations for Q4 are looking worse than expected. After all, that quarter doesn't start until about Oct. 1.
DeleteNice tip, 10:45.
DeleteSome thoughts on the odds.
100 percent chance there will be another recession.
80% chance it's in 2014.
50% chance it's this year.
40% chance it's on now, but you don't find out until later
Where are you 10:45? No surprise that Q4 looking bad. Q3 remains down at my site.
ReplyDeleteI find it nauseating that copy like this continues to be posted on our websites (this one from Cincinnati.com). How many errors can you find in this sentence?
ReplyDeleteNoted for it's Italian food and its motion picture history, Newport's famed pompilio's is celebrating 80 yeras in business.
This is beyond shameful, Carolyn!
That reads like it went straight from the writer's fingertips to the web, with no editor getting in the way. Who needs those guys?
DeleteCould anyone please advise what the current employee count is at the Louisville CJ, both news and GPS divisions...Thanks ( Or point me in the right direction).
ReplyDeleteJim, the papers in Jersey are down even more from 2012 to 2013 and that's a fact ! All this means is the same old thing, less people reached for advertisers. It would be real hard to believe, that Furloughs won't be coming again, 1st quarter next year. I can't remember them ever furloughing in the 4th quarter. My guess is because of two of the major holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas generate a lot of advertising money. You just have to be prepared for Gannett, to do almost anything. No one's job is secure unless your sitting on the board!
ReplyDeleteGannett issued its social media policy today to all employees, TV and print. Comes the day after the Canadian Press (Canada's equivalent to the AP) issued a similar policy.
ReplyDeleteyes, another attempt to control us. Not a good feeling

DeleteThey have been writing this social media policy for at least 3 years and this is all they came up with?
DeleteGet your resumes ready - again - Q4 cuts are a'commin. Merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteEmail down company wide all day. Very productive.
ReplyDeleteThis is depressing. In a Wilmington News Journal story about a near riot yesterday in Newark, Del., there is a sentence and a cutline that begin:
ReplyDelete"A guy who identified himself only as Colm . . . "
A "guy"? This is what happens when they eliminate copy editing jobs.
"Refrain from writing or posting anything that could compromise Gannett’s reputation as a TRUSTED source of news and information"
ReplyDeleteWhat a bunch of CLOWNS!!
Uncle Larry will be handing out pink slips in the next quarter. One reason he spends even less time mingling with the staff he candidly admits he doesnt know. Where is the inspirational leadeship we so need? Hiding in their offices, just like the people they replaced.
ReplyDeleteWhere has Banikarim been? How about Micek? Both have disappeared into the night.
DeleteWhat prompted the social media message?
ReplyDeleteGracia couldn't post vacation pictures to her Facebook page.
Deletei still can't believe they let Brad Robertson leave Gannett. His leadership is missed.
