    1. The idea being one statewide paper instead of six smaller ones? Is NJ the experiment to see if it works before they try it in Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida and New York?

    2. You're kidding right? here in Fl. there are 3 distinct areas, North, Central, and South. A statewide paper to cover all areas would have to be 3 times their size as of now. Of course that would mean 18-24 pages Mon. thru Wed.!

Please say it ain't so. How dumb can Gannett get?

    3. No, you'll get a snippet from each. Even now, the combined HNT and CN lives up to what one publisher once said about coverage: "A mile wide and an inch deep."

  3. Not related to Gannett layoffs but more journalists losing work because of Gannett. Reuters is letting their sports freelancers go and instead is going to use the photos of the USATSI photographers.

  4. NJ Today will have one zoned regional story on B-1, otherwise the paper will be ROP for north/central/south.

    1. Even sports? Yeah, that's going to work well. Not.

    2. For Cherry Hill, consolidation can't come soon enough. It could only be an upgrade from the product that is being put out now. In the past few months since a new executive editor took over, the paper has consistently run 2-3 AP wire stories on the front page, something that hadn't been done for decades. On some days, including Sundays, there is ONE staff story on the front page. There are more local stories in the much smaller BCT and South Jersey Times than in the Courier Post. And across the river, The Inquirer has been beating the CP on stories for weeks. With mismanagement, poor decisions, and low morale, consolidation sounds like an upgrade.

  5. Consolidation in Indiana is months, maybe a year away, after the bone head move the top staff made this Friday, they will be lucky to be printing any daily papers at all. Folks are going to cancel like hot cakes...That's what Gracie wants.not paper..digital

    2. Jim has a post from The Lafayette paper. Explaining why the rag will get even smaller, and push the online edition. It will not fly in that town.....Most likely will print 3 days a week with in months as circulation drops like a brick

  7. Has Shreveport been affected by the layoffs? I know your grid says zero layoffs but I'm wondering if that is accurate.

    1. It was accurate as of late July but things seem to be changing every day. May not be accurate now.

  8. Well if the NJ is ture it will be more than a 12% cut for the NJ newspapers. For exapmle: Cherry Hill would lose the pressroom/mailroom/prepress area (this is if they also move the Commercial jobs CH prints) this number alone would be over 12% of the staff... However Asbury would need to hire more press/mailroom staff for the increased work...

I am sure they will have more than 1 zoned page, more like 5-6 zoned editions with roughly 8-16 zoned pages they would lift for each zone. Classified/real estate on the weekends would be around 8-10 pages. So no on the 1 zoned page come back to reality.

This may not take place until the press is installed in Asbury and from what I hear is October.

  10. Gannett has pretty much screwed up all the newspapers they own in New Jersey, now we’re to believe that got a plan to combine the remnants of their ownership into a successful state newspaper..give me a break.

  11. Cherry hill's commercial work has already gone to Wilmington. The mailroom workers in ch make 16 a hour. The mailroom in wilmington hires ex inmates and welfare mothers at 8.50 an hour. The new production boss in Wilmington is from CH and is pushing commercial work.

  12. Who is this Dale Carpenter guy? He really has it in for the pressmen in Phoenix...no raises for 13 years and now demanding, another 10% cut in pay!! How does this guy sleep at night?? This pressroom is the lowest paid, 4 color tower, double-wide pressroom in the country. Pressmen lost their homes after the last contract took 6.5% in pay reductions; plus a week's vacation. This guy MUST be out of his mind. What is his position with Gannett, again? "VP of STUPIDITY"....

    3. He was living in Phoenix but got corporate job and moved closer to the crystal palace so he can do his bad deeds out of shooting range. Bottom line, save money.

    4. I thought y'all were gonna walk? Seems like a good time.

    5. Lowest in the country. Would you mind posting the top two sites and their pay scale. Not that I doubt you. Someone lost their house because they lost a week of vacation?

    6. If you want to negotiate compensation, you need skills for which demand is increasing not decreasing.

      Delete
    7. That is true. However those skills are needed now to run the press. Seems like a little leverage.

    8. If they walk, GPS will have a crew of pressman pulled from other sites to go and run the press.
Its been done before and it will happen again.

  13. Wonder where the ball will drop this week?

But if you have already drank the Gannett Kool Aid you will be fine in your pretend world of no layoffs and secure jobs. "layoffs? what layoffs? There haven't been any layoffs at Gannett sites"

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
