When in doubt, brand it with every name available

Quick question: Who produced this video on The Arizona Republic's azcentral.com website? Was it azcentral? USA Today? Or (most likely) KXTV in Sacramento, Calif.?

As you can see in the screenshot, above, the video about 19 Arizona firefighters who died Sunday battling a brushfire carries all three brand names.

  3. Went looking for the best mainbar fire folo this morning and azcentral.com got into the details of how and why it happened in a much more comprehensive way than any other stories I read. The emotion angle is important, of course, but anybody can do that one.

  4. So now this blog has gone from helping Gannett employees communicate with each other as well as sharing information to a critique of the work Gannett employees still employed are doing. This and the critique on the gay marriage photo only hurts the employees doing the work and not Gannett management.

    What a butt weevil move.

    1. Perhaps you are a new reader. In any case, this blog has included critiques of all kinds since I first launched it more than five years ago.

    3. This is 2:02 and no I'm not a new reader.

Yes I am aware you have always criticized anything Gannett. It is that I just now noticed how that can impact the real employees doing the actual work. You are fine bashing management moves but stay away from the rest of us. We endure enough criticism from bosses and don't need you piling on.

  5. This is one of those days when I really enjoy the fact that I can remove really stupid comments -- and no one else can.

  6. Once more, some anonymous poster whines about what they claim is excessive whining here. Ironic, no?

  8. KXTV shot the video, but it was shared to all sites via the VPC, which adds the USA Today logo to everything they edit/share. Because azcentral has the logo overlay feature in Brightcove turned on, it also adds their logo. It's messy, but if a site decides to turn on logo overlay vs. adding a logo in video editing, this what will happen.

  9. Someone on the line, under the pressure of a deadline and all sorts of bureaucratic operating procedures implemented to fend off legal action and copyright infringement just included all the logos to play it safe; anyone complains, they can say they covered all the bases.

Kinda like USAToday running an "Advertisement" slug over ads that look like editorial matter, even though anyone can tell the difference: run it anyway, to keep the Brass off my a**.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
