  1. ABM building services has taken over Phoenix properties. Is the Gannett getting their monies worth? Recently Arizona lost 19 firefighters battling a forest fire at Yarnell Hill. Our Governor ordered all flags to be flown at half staff for 19 days, starting July 1. On Tuesday (the 9th) The American Flag flying at The Deer Valley Center was at full staff. I asked ABM Security Guards why it wasn't. The Reply. It is not in our contract. We only have to lower the flag on federal orders. How awful. Our Company Gannett that serves the people of Arizona can't even pay someone in Arizona to lower our flag to honor 19 firefighters killed in the line of action. Shame on you Gannett.

    1. i'll bet when the pressmen go on strike in phx it won't be covered in the ABM contract either. what a shame !

    2. They must have "re-negotiated the ABM contract. Flag was half mast today. Ahhh...the power of the internet!

  2. Well, here’s at least one news outlet responsibly reporting on the Freedom Forum/Newseum shenanigans and this report is mostly critical.

  3. Hed on 1A in a Wisconsin paper today. You can see it at the Newseum.

"Judge OKs ethanol plant's sale to for $16.5m."

    Only three errors!

    1. I'm pretty sure the designer who did Oshkosh spent most of the shift doing that garish cutout that goes over the masthead. BTW, isn't it a violation of the USPS mailing-rate regulations to not have the date of publication clearly displayed on the front page (instead of covered up by a pop group)?

    2. Yesterday a story on the front for Oshkosh ended mid sentence. The day before that the three columns on the centerpiece were out of order.

      Monkeys at the helm?

    4. A couple of Sundays ago, the FDL Reporter had a story that was supposed to start on A-1, jumping to the inside. Another story got the stuff on A-1 killed but they never killed out the jump so the story started mid-story on A-4.

    5. PEOPLE-- THE DESIGNERS DO NOT EDIT THE DAMN TEXT! THEY CANNOT. IT IS LOCKED IN. How many times does t his have to be posted. NOT DESIGNERS.

    6. Fucking up a jump or not ending a story doesn't involve "design?"

    8. Our pressroom calls our I.C. when they see a typo or grammatical error. That's the definition of being locked in, but they still make the effort to turn out a product they are proud of.

Design Centers have institutionalized "It's not my problem, man." But damn, are they proud of their edgy design, like using RED in a headline. Whoooo. Check out their facebook page, a miracle they don't rip out both shoulders patting themselves on the back.

  4. Its time for the season of giving well taking at Gannett. FURLOUGHS. Yes meetings today at Deer Valley Plant. Just had my review. Well Gannett gives and takes away. Only problem they always take more than they give.

  7. I will try this again. I believe the stock today hit an intraday high with one trade @ 26.73, which would be the highest intraday stock price since June 6, 2008.

    1. According to Google, Yahoo and MarketWatch, GCI's 52-week intraday high is still $26.75.

  8. ABM Building Services is horrible, plain and simple. They overcharge and they under-clean. Leave the office at night and you will find the same stuff on the floor the next day. I don't believe they know how a vacuum works. They use some kind of device that looks like a leaf blower. Brilliant. Quite simply, ABM sucks

  9. You would think the local paper could find new hires by advertising on Gannett owned properties like in the classified ads of the paper itself or even on Career Builder. Apparently the jobs descriptions are so bad they are using Craigslist to find people.

  10. Who ever cut this deal with ABM must be crazy. We where told they would be doing all facilities work.

They pretty much pick and chose what they will and will not work on and use other Gannett resources to fill in (Gannett wake up). Gannett cannot find people who are will to work for poor working conditions, treatment, hours, and wages (you can move the order around as you see fit). Can hardly wait to see who much health and welfare goes up this year. No matter how you look at it another wage cut! If they could Gannett would love to be ABM
low wages, no benefits etc. but give them time they are working on it!!

    1. Not only ABM but changing job requirements that used to use company vehicles to requiring drivers use their own personal vehicles with proof of insurance for deliveries. No wonder why they can't fill most of the positions. Strange hours, low pay, wear and tear on personal vehicles. Not to mention heavy the repetitive nature of the work. They are looking for super workers and only willing to pay for underachievers.

  14. Well,
There is no lay off news as of today.
But,then how many have been laid off in the last six months that have not been reported here.
We know it is happening. There have been random posts
here from people who are now unemployed.
Gannett has figured out that they can cut employees slowly and steadily and avoid the negative press
and negative effect on stock price.Last one out the door, turn out the lights.

    1. Those random posts mostly come from you, unemployed person.

    2. No,very well employed, former Gannett employed, thank you for asking.
You must be one of the Gannett loyalists
who believes they will be forever employed by Gannett.
These past 4 years have not been enough warning that your job could be gone tomorrow and without warning? Get some self-esteem and get a new job for crying out loud.

    3. Really? You seem to harbor a lot of bitterness, especially toward people who still work for Gannett.

Also, you never share any of these details of your good employment. If you're safely out of Gannett, what is the problem?

  15. For about two years our site has not filled any position when an employee resigned or was terminated. We may not have formerly laid off anyone, but no new hires means dumping a lot more work on the rest of the staff with no raises or minimal raises at best. People are starting to realize there are other jobs out there and we are starting to see our best workers leaving. Mediocre people stay producing mediocre results.
