  1. Over all newspaper print revenue is on the decline, but Gannett doesn’t seem interested in trying to turn that around. The sales departments have been given the marching orders to sell digital with little or no concern for the print side, well not until losses are shown in the quarterly reports.
I understand digital is the future, not sure for Gannett, but just the same, that is the trend for future news readers.
One would think that they would at least go down fighting and come up with some exciting new print advertising packages and programs to get advertisers back or at the very least go back to the basics of print selling.

  3. Yes, and while we're at it, let's invest in CD players and Kodak film too. Great idea!

    1. People forget this is primarily a newspaper company. They have let in people as upper level managers that want to destroy it. Those should be the people that are pushed out because they are unproductive. They remind me of the people that tried to replace Coke with New Coke. they just will never get it. There is a base of people that still want and only want to read a newspaper. They want it to be informative even if the news was on a 24 hr news channel yesterday. They want it delivered everyday at a reasonable rate. Digital will never replace that at least not by Gannett. Broadcast too. Gannett a few years ago were limping along in broadcast television. Now they are expanding it. They have got the wrong people running the Company. A bunch of bean counters and it's the future types.

    2. Newspaper was the place where the WHOLE story used to be. ALL the details, facts, things people needed to know. Digital still only produces blurbs and brush overs.

There's also the simple fact that people can't afford all the gadgets...phones, tablets, I-pads, laptops, or the plans to run them.

With over 3 dollar gas, soon to be 4, people don't have the money to shell out for an 18 page paper.

  4. Scooped again Jimmy. Have you broken a story in the last year? Griffin to National Sales. Read all about it.....someplace else. That has to sting. Oh and the stock went up. SO much for all your efforts yesterday

    1. Link to the company's press release about Griffin's move: http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=84662&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1840262 .

Ellen Leifeld is in as interim. That makes sense since she's probably still in the area after finishing at Cherry Hill. I wonder who she's a placeholder for.

    2. November 18, 2010 - July 23, 2013. 581 brutal, unqualified days as publisher. He destroyed a once proud East Group location, was demoted four times in the same span, and leaves The News Journal in absolute shambles. The screams of joy could be heard all the way into Pennsylvania.

The stock price stays high because Gannett is slowly moving away from print. I.E. the acquisition of the 23 broadcast stations. That is why stock went up and stays stable. So, 5:03 if you are employed at a print site, keep on laughing at Jim....all the way to the unemployment check line.

    4. Missed a year, it was actually 946 days. Still brutal, still unqualified. Nearly 1000 days of BS. Having bankrupted JRC and the Philadelphia Inquirer, Ron Burgundy was interrupted on his way to doing the same thing to his third newspaper by Claybaugh and Kane. Kudus to both men having the balls to convince the Anchorman's martini drinking Hawaiian buddy (Dickey Boy) to jettison Stoney LaDouche.

    5. Yeah, Jim missed the company e-mail that you and I read announcing Griffin's appointment. Jim doesn't get access to company e-mail because he doesn't work here.

    6. Yes. Claybaugh and Kane are company heroes for continually undermining Burgundy. Claybaugh was dispatched to Salisbury to essentially spy on Griffin and gather evidence to present to Dickey. What a way to run a business. So who might Claybaugh be spying on now? My hunch is Tom Donovan in Asbury Park. Good luck, TD.

  5. Their will be furloughs in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Rifs as well, good times at GCI and GPS. Give it a day or so for the announcement. More info to come, comes from the top. Evan, your a piss poor leader.

    2. Source for this info? Anything to make it seem credible? How about some numbers? How many furloughs? How many "Rifs?" The omission of all of those details doesn't make this sound trustworthy.

And if this isn't announced in a "day or so," will you come back and admit you made it up?

    3. I sure will, I don't post what I do not know. I don't have numbers yet, we will all have them soon enough, as for furloughs, were all on that bus YEP

      Right. So you have nothing.

  7. Gracia said flatly during this week's meeting with staff that there will be no company-wide furloughs in 2013. (She did say local units might opt for them, but not divisions).

  8. 3:42, not quite the same thing. Print brought in $565 million in the second quarter, our greatest source of income.

  9. Here's a photo of Griffin at the meeting. Good riddance.

  10. Long overdue day for Wilmington.
The industry is hard enough but when you put someone in the position of publisher with only Nat'l sales experience one would only expect the results that occurred. Gannett has a good property in Wilmington and you only set it up for failure with that hire.
Anyone who shared 10 minutes with the real life Ron Burgundy and you knew we were doomed.
    Here's to a better future!

  11. Did you not read the comment, did you not understand it?? Read it again slowly as there is most certainly a point.....he was a crap hire, he ran the paper into the ground. What are you, his golf buddy? No, wait....he sucks at golf.

  12. Clearly if you need to fix a mess, Ellen Leifeld is your go-to. She righted the ship in Cherry Hill, infusing a great deal of employee morale at a bereft place weighed down by lousy management. She left it in good hands and now moves on to her next challenge. There's a reason you call this lady out of retirement twice. She's kicks butt but knows how to treat people decently.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
