  1. Jim,
I saw our former CDO, Saridakis speak here in SFO and he was asked during the Q&A session, what his opinion is of newspapers, and specifically, Gannett. His response...

    "Dead"

    Asked about pay walls...

"I said they don't work for local newspapers, and I was correct, they don't work for Gannett. If they did, Gannett would be hyping it more than they did Deal Chicken!"

    Then asked about Gannett specifically...
"In survival mode, although the recent acquisition is helpful for the short term. USA Today is not relevant anymore"

    1. What is going on at GPS sites? Are they having trouble with what I refer to as scab labor? They were all hired as a replacement work force after GPS terminated most of its Gannett employees.

  4. Does anybody think the design "studios" were created for any other reason than to cut jobs and save money? I thought that until I realized they secondary purpose was to make life close to unbearable for the few remaining "word" editors, who have spend too much time now fixing design screwups or horrible misjudgments.

Initially, I thought: "Oh great, all the good laid-off design folks might have a chance to get rehired. Ha, how stupid was that! Now I can only pray the designer I'm working with has ever read a newspaper or met a deadline

    1. Make no mistake:
The clock is ticking on the Design Stupidos, just as it is on GPS. The Belo (TV stations) acquisition was Exhibit A in that argument.

    2. The design studios were created for one reason: for management to control the demise of print. I compare those places to slaughter houses. Herd all the animals into a few places to expedite their final purpose. It ain't pretty, but it's a fact. And having a Gannett design center on your resume is the best way to have it ignored by a future employer. Gannett is not a respected listing on a resume these days.

  6. Amen, 12:47 am. Now we have poorly designed pages filled with more typos, nonsensical headlines and other snafus.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
