  1. Journal News/Low-Hud lays off its armed guards. ... DEVELOPING. ... No word if Jan and Cindee still have theirs at their residences. Knowing Gannett - most likely.

  2. This Washington Post story calling out the cowardice of the Journal News in the aftermath of the gun map fiasco really nails it.

Is this a wide spread stealth lay off situation ?
Please post information as it is known.

  8. Hatchets began yesterday in Upper NE. Layoffs galore and gutless upper management who get rid of good people and save their "friends" who do NOTHING.

    1. I received my walking papers. Award winning employee who made a lot of money and developed many lasting relationships. Probably as blessing in disguise. Poor work culture, favoritism, countless lies and broken promises, anti semitic and homophobic remarks. A loved one dies, and not one word from any Gannett employee. It was not a pleasant place to be around. I will not mention any names yet, until I receive my severance pay and find another place to work.

    2. I am sorry. what area of the country are you?

      Delete
    3. I'm sorry. This was not always the way. At my paper, manager hires best friend, manager makes sure friend makes goal every month, manager throws rest of team under bus. Director hides. And it's a wonder why we are in trouble.

    4. Don't confuse co-worker or boss with friend.

You may have wished for sympathy on the death of your loved one, but the last time that manager shared a kind word with a staffer they were hauled into h.r. and read the riot act.

For every person that wants a more personal experience, there's one who doesn't. Better for employees and management to stick to the job and avoid entanglements from start time to quit time.

      Delete
    5. 5:09 that may be true but if the manager knows the employee they should be able to use their own judgement on whether to say a kind word or not. Problem is most managers hide in their office and can't relate to other employees.

    6. The problem today is that the managers hired today don't have a clue how to manage. They are trying more to keep their own heads above water, then helping their staff. They act as messengers from above. You don't see or hear from them until someone above them want something. Until then....don't bother them. They may have been good foot soldiers, but given a management position, they let the title go to their heads(hence hiring friends) or they are so far over their heads, they hide behind closed doors. So many blame their own failures on their team, that they will fire anyone they suspect might be a possible threat to them....or even lay them off. I see it more and more in Gannett land today.

  12. Most people at the market level in GPS Circ/Sales really give/gave their best + more everyday.

The national GPS teams are the ones driving the company into the ground...top heavy management that doesn't have any interest in trying to develop new ideas that might actually create some sustainable revenue. Their mission is to keep cutting costs to sustain the operation as long as their own paychecks and bonuses can be paid.

The end of GPS will be the rest of the field staff getting laid off while the ridiculous number of VPs and national management people are congratulating themselves on destroying the company.

  13. So sad in Cincinnati! So many good-hard working-dedicated people have left, or been let go at both USA Today and the Enquirer....that they now out-number the Bully's and illiterate-classless people who remain!!!! The management at the Enquirer should be ashamed.....What an empty shell that once proud company has become. Literally, management has no respect in community. Even though their print-edition has dramatically improved; their management skills and integrity has steadily eroded. What a mess.....

    1. Tell us what is going on at the Cinti paper.

    2. Really you think the print edition has dramatically improved. What am I missing???

The whole paper is a train wreck, led by MB and CW.

    3. @ 5:07 p.m. So those of us who have for now escaped being laid off are "illiterate and classless"? Some of us have been around for a while and are doing all we can to stay employed. Unfortunately, that means trying to make the bullies happy. Where do you get off making such a sweeping statement about people who are left, most of whom are working their asses off while you criticize them on the blog.

  19. Why are we hearing so very little about what is going with lay offs?
I thought this blog was the place to find this type of information.
    Yet we know very little.
Is this a country wide lay off situation?
A site by site stealth situation ?

  25. The deadline for New York Times newsroom managers to take voluntary buyouts came and went yesterday — without reaching the target of 30 takers.

Now, insiders are worried that involuntary cuts — layoffs — will start.

  26. Stealth layoffs again. One by one by one as Gannett tried to fly under the radar and not disrupt Martore's stock

  27. 9:34, 8:42, 8:45, 5:16, 9:26 - your singular obsession with Gannett layoffs is almost as unsettling as the creepy posts you always share with us about how stupid Gannett employees are for not quitting their jobs.

Get help, dude. Or get a job. Either will make your life better.

  29. Well, there ARE playoffs, but Jim oddly dilutes the impact and discussion by starting new threads comparing Apple to Gannett, some new weather video and the STYLE alliance.

All worthy topics, but when memos go out saying 100 layoffs, seems he should be trying to keep the blog focused on that, at least for a few days.

Another example of incompetence at the wheel.

  34. Link to a far-reaching article on the future of newspapers in the US, and Tribune specifically. Makes a lot of sense. Here's the pull-quote relevant to Gannetteers:

How much longer, would-be buyers must ask, will cost-cutting maintain profits? With revenues down across the board for years, profit has only been maintained through continued cost-cutting.

If you’re down five percent or so in revenue, the math by now is fairly simple: You cut your way to the profit number that reasonably satisfies CEOs, boards, lenders, and the market.

  35. GPS layoffs of single copy drivers made no since and weren't necessary. Why create a division devoted to circulation, and distribution then let go of the drivers that distributed the papers. They were a positive asset to the print revenue and print is still making a net profit. Evan Ray said those cuts were necessary to move forward. I guess that meant to end Single Copy Sales and go all Digital now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is difficult. Every lay-off is personal and heart-wrenching. However, layoffs in the newsroom is a huge indication on what is going on. Less coverage=less local info. What has happened in Cinti?

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
