  1. One and a half years later and this company has fallen apart...Gannett was smart to fire this entire executive team, but this business is falling apart as we speak!

  2. Kevin Hall started as ad director in Shreveport yesterday. He is former ad director for Laua Hollingsworth. Watch out Bailey. First Zanmiller...now you.

  3. What is a "parareporter"? My site's internal job listings included that title. Is that another name for someone who types in the calendar items & news briefs? A sports stringer?

  4. It's a reporter who jumps from a plane to keep pace with the rest of the company as it falls.

  8. Shreveport, Cinncy, Phoenix, Rosslyn. It doesnt matter. A company run by beancounters, fourth tier editors and yes men eventually fails.

  12. USA TODAY column: What makes a good journalist? How about delivering the answer in print instead of the lame video that is a time inefficient delivery of the content versus print.

  13. Layoffs are cominghow could anyone doubt this?
How many layoffs and buyouts and under the radar cuts will it take before you all realize that you are next?

  14. 2:20 AM -- Exactly what do you fear so much from 9:06 PM’s accurate post that you have to nastily shoot it down?

The fact of the matter is, individuals and companies are, to borrow Gannett speak, admittedly aligning expenses and resources to match the tax hits and coming costs of the Affordable Care Act that take effect January 1st.

One hopes you’ve heard about it all working for a media company, yet you think comments like those have run their course. Well, it’s only just begun and all you need to do is talk to advertisers and businesses who support this company via their advertising support. It’s very concerning.

So, like it or not, get ready.

  15. Limiting FSA’s (Flexible Spending Accounts) to $2,500 as the Affordable Care Act demands next year will alone result in millions of dollars going to pay for it from employees of just one company in a top Gannett Midwest market, monies that up until this law, were spent as pretax dollars at local pharmacies, grocery stores, physical therapists, doctors, and more.

Consumers will either spend less to make up for it or take it from another area of their household budgets. Either way doesn’t bode well for advertisers and they know it. Smart ad reps working with them, their managers and publishers, know it too.

  17. If Kevin Hall is back at a smaller property in Laura's group, Bailey's days are probably numbered!

  18. So how is the coupon queen - Rudd Davis doing, Jum? You claim to have a direct line. And how's his more impact ful brother at Viacom? A bit Of Penis envy?

  19. Former Cincinnati Enquirer Larry Beaupre has died. He was set to retire from The Times-Tribune of Scranton, Pa., but died before he could do so. Sources report the cause was lung cancer.

  20. Today's paper had an 8 page pull-out on the new pricing model. That's a lot of newsprint to drive you to digital.

  21. Why no comment on Ellwood retirement?

  22. I think Jim should start striking all posts related to the health care act and layoffs since there is no substance to the premise and it is getting tiresome.

  23. I can't help but sit back and laugh at the stupidity that is Laura Hollingsworth.

  24. 8:44 Generally agreed. Although posts specifically about Gannett's self-financed healthcare plan are appropriate.

  25. I wish this company would hurry up and get on with it and sell or close the local papers they are destroying. They need to get out of local journalism and just be a content aggregator,or what ever they call this garbage now.

We need a real local paper. I need a local paper...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well said, 11:57. Now for the bigger problem. Every paper has been stripped of its valuable resources necessary to run a successful newspaper. If someone wanted to buy the paper from gannett, they would have to spend an extra fortune trying to recreate what once was. Papers aren't dead, Gannett has forced them to be at the expense of every community.

  27. No need to read Florida Today when we have Space Coast Daily. Not only is it easy to read and informative, it is actually well designed. The graphics are state-of-the-art. It makes Florida Today look like it was written and designed in a high school classroom. Gracia, have you seen Space Coast Daily?

  28. I don't know what will replace these newspaper shells. It might be a new paper or maybe one these news sites. What it will have is some actual news and some reporting to compete with the pictures and press release stuff that has taken over the Gannett locals like the chickenpox. If Gannett would just sink these old things or sell them off, we would get the next level much quicker.

  29. REALITY

"I think Jim should start striking all posts related to the health care act .."

Really? Prove it. Show us. Present the data. Waiting.

IMHO, you can't. FACT: there are lots of CPAs saying privately, "dump your medical-insurance plan and save yourself a zillion problems."

Heck, the old GM dumped their medical-insurance problems.

Anyone who doesn't think GCI wouldn't -- prove it.

  30. The damage that has been done to The Times in Shreveport this past year is immeasurable. Laura can bring in a whole brigade of her cronies and it ain't gonna get fixed. I wish Kevin Hall luck because he's gonna need it.

  31. Ellwood,is retiring??????!!

  32. Ellwood's retirement announcement was as invisible as she's been the last 2 years.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
