  1. Wisconsin State Journal endorses Romney, becomes latest paper to flip from Obama in ’08
More than a few who endorsed Obama in 2008 decide to vote present in 2012 instead.

    2. This endorsement is not uncommon from them, look at their recent endorsements for president; most Republican. And they even say in the endorsement that it was "hard" to do. This means nothing.

  2. Way to go Journal!
Common sense is finally spreading across America in big,big waves.

  3. Correct.
    Common people,working Americans,
regular folks with common sense are finally waking up and realizing
    the truth.
And yes, it is spreading like wild fire.

  4. As it pertains to Gannett, a surging economy from Romney might just save this sorry ass company.
    Damn.

  5. More likely, 8:59AM, is that a surging economy will create an environment in which competition for eyeballs allows new, innovative and disruptive media to overtake Gannett.

    Bully, I say!

  6. Talk to advertisers who support this company and it’s pretty clear that a majority will cut people’s hours, entire positions and yes, even advertising expenditures too should we get four more years of the same.

In fact, the WSJ had a great piece today on businesses preparing to cut hours just based on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act…higher tax rates on top earners as Obama seeks (most of whom own small businesses) will exacerbate it.

  7. A newspaper endorsement hardly constitutes "America."

  8. I know many advertisers(small businesses) who will cut way back on expenses including advertising if 4 more years happens.
    They all predict financial
    meltdown.

  9. Jim – Deleting repetitive, derogatory rants posted earlier today was smart, but you're employing two methods now – one indicates a deletion, the other nukes everything.

So, in the spirit of full-disclosure, why are you employing both?

  10. 11:36 Good question.

I delete comments like those, leaving no trace, because I don't want people to think I removed something of possible consequence.

Also, I don't want to force readers to scroll through lines and lines of "This comment has been removed by a blog administrator."

This has been my practice since Day 1, more than five years ago.

  11. I wonder how many editors have ordered up election day weather stories even though there has never been an ounce of evidence weather plays any role in voter turnout but this meme seems to keep cropping up every election day.

  12. On a whim, apparently, without putting their own egos in check, or consulting the correct people that would be able to give sound advice, only a few people, out of this HUGE company, decided that Franklin, TN's NCC will be closing Thursday Nov 15. All of the GPS collections and payment center for the USCP sites and USAToday will be moving to Springfield, MO. No idea what their staff is able to handle there, but taking over collections and payments for the ENTIRE country is probably a little more than they can handle. Hiring more people to help wouldn't make sense because then all you're doing is moving it from one city to another, a dumb idea and wasteful, so I guess they think this little Gannett paper can handle all of everything. I just hope no one is getting yet another bonus or kickback for doing it, not really caring what happens, but just doing it for their own personal benefit. No disrespect to those who will be in for a rude awakening when all of this comes to their town, but I have no clue what they are thinking, but then again I'm not the one that decided this will work. Maybe someone else can answer that??????

  13. After reviewing options for open enrollment, thank god my wife has a great job and great benefits. It's even better that her employer doesn't penalize spouses for being married.

    1. I think it's awesome how Gannett walked into Franklin, TN. today and gave 10 days notice that they were shutting it down. No consideration to the ones who have kept that side of the company running for 10+ years, and even some that were there over 20. Giving an almost non-existent severance package for years of hard work and dedication. While these soon to be former employees are still in shock, the big dogs walk around with their cocky selves, like they just won a gold medal. Good job Gannett, many kudos to you. You have affected peoples livelihoods and gave a middle finger. Word of mouth goes a long way, let's see how well you do with the loss of sales.

  14. A company dumb enough to have a CFO with so much outside work, is a company dumb enough to have such DULL, MORONIC stories. Even with thousands of employees.

GCI must be holding all the "original" content for after the election. Because it was sure as frack not in today USAT.

  16. Newspaper endorsements DO NOT mean anything to anyone. Years of research backs that up. Newspapers are SO dumb to do it because they think they have to so show people that they know what they are talking about and what they are doing. People do NOT care about newspapers' opinions of ANYTHING. What they care about is the news and the facts about what is going on. Newspapers shoot themselves in the foot every time they endorse political candidates, and especially when they switch sides. Consumers feel alienated and wondering why are they choosing sides when they are supposed to just offer the credentials and the facts and let the PEOPLE make up their OWN minds - which is what they are going to do ANYWAY. Show me a newspaper that endorses political candidates and I'll show you a newspaper that will NOT be in business in 2016 - regardless of whoever they endorse or if they put up a paywall or not. And, that's a fact. Endorse that!

  17. I finally have terminated my COBRA health insurance obtained through the Gannett Benefits center. My deepest sympathy goes out to anyone still trapped in the Gannett COBRA web. Gannett phone staffers are as incompetent as they are polite. The only saving grace is dealing with supervisors. Thankfully, I am finished with this insanity. My condolences to those who are not.

  21. Isn't it a major conflict of interest for the shared service centers to report directly to the VP of internal audit? Rumor has it the while the VP of internal audit was explaining to the NCC in Franklin TN that they were being shut down, one employee said "I knew it" only to be lambasted by the VP for not giving her the respect of finishing what she had to say on this difficult day.

  24. It's not even noon in Ohio, but Carolyn Washburn & Co. have screwed up BIG TIME already, reporting Romney ahead there by 92,000 votes before counting even began!!!

Nice job as usual, Carolyn. How you manage to keep your job would be a mystery anywhere but Gannett.

  25. Washburn epitomizes the brilliant Gannett newsroom executive: copy editor mentality, grade school teacher management style and the inspirational leaderdship of Jay Leno.

  26. 5:10 p.m...you're right about Gannett COBRA. I found new insurance that costs a little more, but was shocked to see my drug co-pays down by 80% or more. Those monthly premiums don't hurt as much. Scripts I paid $45 for with Gannett are now $5, and some are less than that. An allergy spray that was $87 for three months with Gannett is now $5 a month.
And the service from the insurer is a hell of a lot better.

  27. Please don't equate Washburn with a copy editor, 12:16. This company is full of outstanding copy editors -- many of them bearing the brunt of the layoffs and buyouts -- and Washburn couldn't carry their pica poles. If you read any of her posts, you can see her language shortcomings, and anyone on the desk will tell you she's never written a headline. Her idea of suggesting a better hed is "Try again." And again. And again. And again. So criticize her all you want, but please don't trash your colleagues in the process.

  28. Before they told the staff at the NCC office in Franklin, TN. The VP and two others went into the controller's office and told her what was going to happen and that she was going to be made to leave the premises immediately. They gave her no opportunity to say anything to her staff before they perp walked her out the office without being able to remove her personal belongings from her office. She has to schedule a time with an HR rep. to escort her to the Franklin office to retrieve what is her personal property like she had committed some kind of crime. The controller had been a great employee for well over 20 years! so,this is how Gannett wants to be known for how they treat long time, hard working, quality employees!? Be afraid, BE VERY AFRAID!!

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
