Cincy | Former editor Beaupre is dead at 68

The Times-Tribune of Scranton, Pa., where Larry Beaupre was the top editor, did not give a cause of death in a news story today.

[Updated at 11:36 a.m. ET Nov. 12: Beaupre had suffered from cancer for four years, the paper said in a longer follow-up story today.]

Beaupre
Beaupre had announced plans to retire last summer after a half-century in print journalism. He said he would keep working through March to help his successor and then planned to work as a consultant for another year or so.

Beaupre was The Cincinnati Enquirer's editor during the infamous Chiquita Banana project scandal that ultimately cost him his job in Gannett, where he'd been a long-time and highly regarded news executive.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie; four children, Becky, Peter, Alexandra and Laura, and four grandchildren.

  1. The tumult and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart.
    Still stands thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.

    R.I.P., sir.

Dear Banana-heads -- give it a rest, for a couple of days. Thanks.

  3. Grow up, 8:28.

It's so unfortunate that Larry will be remembered largely (only?) for Chiquita. He was a fine newsman and he made the Enquirer a better newspaper in many many ways. He wasn't warm and fuzzy, but he was smart, committed and professional. Many of us learned a lot during his tenure. Chiquita was the result of over-reaching, over-ambition, and, ultimately, trusting someone he never should have trusted. But all of that stemmed from his sincere desire to make the Enquirer a paper of note. It was his Achilles' heel, to be sure. But Gallagher was the real bad guy.
Let's try to remember a decent, talented newsman today and not focus unduly on Chiquita.

  4. Larry was the last great Gannett editor. And as 10:35 AM notes, he made the Enquirer a much better paper, as he also did later in life in Scranton. A fitting piece on Larry today:

  5. And give that old 1998 AJR piece from Alicia Shepard a rest. Here was a better AJR update from 2004:

  7. 10:35, you grow up. You want to dish it out, you got to be willing to take it. Or become a laughingstock.

As for the AJR story -- for the 100,000,000,000th time, if cops who did what CE did, they'd be in prison.

Remember Watergate? Chuck Colson? John Mitchell? And the SPJ crew would be at the front of mob, demanding "justice."

Why do you think GCI settled so quickly, so big? C'mon, this can't be made, any more simpler. Any lower, this would be Gannettoid level.

  8. Larry had his human failings, as we all do, but he was a far better journalist than any of his successors in Westhester.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones.
