  1. This is not a political post. Did anyone watch the debates on NBC last night and notice the little NBC Politics logo flashed in the lower right hand corner.

They seem to be sporting a circle and check mark inside oh so similar to our rotating balls. Hmmm, could it be we stole the idea from NBC?

  2. OK Laura and Linda - under Big Boy Bailey we have lost another advertising manager. Thurman is leaving Shreveport for another Gannett property. Advertising director resigned, advertising managers resigned, advertising employees resigned: What does this say? Under Bailey's watch with Haacker and Hanisee in charge Shreveport advertising will never recover. We are on life support and the doctor (The Crystal Palace) is about to pull the plug.

My plea to Bailey: please come to work at least 5 days a week, please come out your office other than when the ladies are in town, please get to know all of us and not just the select few that you see as special, please lead by example that it takes all of us working "together" to keep our product successful, PLEASE make our advertisers your priority!!!!!!!!!!!

I love my job and others I talk to love their job. We want to make Shreveport successful but you make it hard when you show us that you do not want to be here. We want to be here and we want to be successful - JUST ONE LITTLE PROBLEM...

  3. Laura and Linda don't have the first clue about running a newspaper. If they did, Shreveport wouldn't be in the situation they're in.

  5. 9:36 I will post the following frequently through election day:

I remove all comments focused on partisan politics, as I just did moments ago.

In the past, I tried to encourage intelligent, adult discussion about coverage of politics by Gannett properties.

But those always devolved into angry discussions that had nothing specifically to do with Gannett. So, I've given up.

  6. WHOA

Jim, there needs to be a real "take-out" on SHR.

    Not good. Really.

Institutional investors (who have 92% of GCI) probably not happy. Whoever is handling I.R. @ GCI may actually have to post something about this.

It may not be "material," per se. But does not look good.

This is not just mindless whining. No new advertising - no newspaper.

  8. 8:46 I feel for you, but at least you and your colleagues still want to be there. In Westchester, there's not one person I speak to that wants to be here. Myself included. I've been with the company a number of years and I can tell you there's not a glimpse of light at the end of this tunnel. We recently moved to a new facility and the conditions are simply not acceptable. We're packed like sardines and tempers are rising. Pretty soon I expect people to start physically assaulting each other. The plans clearly did not take into account their employees and their basic needs. To make things worse the publisher is more absent that all her predecessors combined. GOD HELP US!

  10. The New York Times, USA Today and a joint project by The Charlotte Observer and The (Raleigh) News & Observer won gold, silver and bronze awards respectively in the sixth annual Barlett & Steele Awards for Investigative Business Journalism, the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism announced today.

SILVER: “Ghost Factories,” by lead reporters Alison Young and Peter Eisler of USA Today, received the silver award of $2,000. The series involved a 14-month investigation that revealed locations of more than 230 long-forgotten smelters and the poisonous lead they left behind. Reporters used handheld X-ray devices to collect and test 1,000 soil samples to prove there was a serious threat to children living in dozens of neighborhoods.

“As a result of their efforts, government officials in 14 states have reopened flawed investigations, tested soil or taken other action to clean up contaminated property,” said the judges.

  11. Everyone's talking about Romney burying Obama in the debate, and it's getting lots of online traffic. so what does Tallahassee do?
They paint the background of their website pink and put a print tinge in their newsprint (I'm not kidding) to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The generic AP debate story is the fifth link down, is you can read it against a pink background.

  14. 10:49 Clearly written by someone who doesn't work for LoHud.com or The Journal News. The new space is a huge improvement and the paper's doing great work. Not so much over at Cablevision, we hear. Seems like another sad attempt at spreading misinformation by the competitor, if you can call them that.

  17. 3:20, I'm in Wisconsin and couldn't care less about your single handed fight against whatever UC hospital is.

And now you want to pick on the handicapped after choosing another group yesterday? Talk about small minds. Go away.

  18. 2:30 I'm watching/listening to that Kramer chat via YouTube. How was it promoted in advance? And is there a link to this video from USAT's website?

  19. Cheese-head, no one cares about you and your bankrupt state. Go fix your own problems before you crap on others, cow-boy. Start by being less of a hick, King Retromitigent. Itty-bitty mindless Gannettoid-in-waiting.

  20. And no one gives a shit with what you do with your banana-gate at the hospital, Cincinnatus.

  21. King Retromitigent? Do you mean possibly retromingent?

Now we know you're just a troll, because the only place Google says your made-up word has been used is in lousy comments on health care stories.

  22. I've now found the link to the Kramer video from USAT's site. I had been looking in the Money section, and found it under News in Tech.

Employees of Military Times, Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and other Gannett Government Media publications were told today to take a five-day furlough before the end of the year.

  25. ACCOUNTING & NEXT Q

This means the salary cut can be booked in 4th Q. Could be concerned about how the calendar year will end. They may already be over budget for calender year.

Also, with upcoming military cuts, these papers will obviously be negatively affected.

Stuff Gannett deadwood wouldn't have a clue about. Cheese does that, along with busting taxpayer wallets.

  26. I was at the NY Associated Press awards last night and LoHud had a good showing, in a highly competitive circulation category, and no, I don't work there. In fact, most of the Gannett properties in New York did very well. I don't deny the staff cuts have hurt us greatly over the last few years, but when people post there is no good work being done across the company, yeah, that offends me. More to the point, I think there is quantifiable evidence to the contrary.

Heard some rumblings about weeklies being in for a round of layoffs?

Gannett's TV stations in 19 cities may be off Dish Network on Sunday (10/7) unless Dish abandons its "AutoHop" feature designed to let viewers skip commercials. The Big 4 networks have gone to court to try to ban "AutoHop".

This comes early in the new TV season when Gannett stations carry lots of NFL and college football.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
