USAT | Here's a photo of the likely new logo

I grabbed this screenshot off USA Today's design mark application from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office site, and posted it from my iPhone. The logo combines a solid dot with the paper's name to the right. The dot may be solid blue, should it appear in print for the first time tomorrow.

  1. Wonder how much they paid for this?

  2. Karen Jurgensen and Al Neuharth were together in the same room yesterday?

  3. So when the big blue ball was removed from the Palace, it was just to Paint It Black?

Are the Rolling Stones playing the anniversary party? :)

  4. Didn't know you could trademark a circle. or is it the earth shrouded by the darkness of ignorance (because no one on it reads the USA Today)?

  5. I think it had better be blue. I recall from my long ago days as a 7th grader reading "Treasure Island" and in that tale being given "the black spot" meant the recipient was marked for death.

  6. The original USAT design was ridiculed, so perhaps we're off to the same start.

From the USPTO design mark application: "The mark consists of a circle to the right of which are the words USA TODAY."

  7. Wonder what Big Al's USAT column will say tomorrow?

  8. A dot. How original. Of course, it must be patented, so no one steals the most basic geometric shape in the freaking UNIVERSE, and in the unique colors of blue or black. Bravo!

  9. Is the dot the one from .com?

  10. Gannett is buying News Group Newspapers in England - there's a little black spot on The Sun today....

  11. It HURTS. I just don't understand... Must stop. Maybe the black circle represebta the black hole GANNETT is falling in to.

  12. Where's the mandatory phrase, "A Gannett Company"?

  13. Remember when GM added their corp logo to every vehicle - only to end the practice in 2010? They said it was an "attempt to play up the individual brand identities of the four remaining brands."

I'm sure it was an attempt not to have each vehicle branded as being "government motors" post bankruptcy.

GANNETT is beyond a black eye. Maybe we will see less of the "A GANNETT CO" slogan for similar reasons as GM?

  14. Maybe this is just a joke?! One can only hope.

  15. Incredibly similar to Goatse International's logo.

  20. Jim once again a day late and a dollar short. Whatever you have here is not what we saw today. Sorry master of doom, today was a great day. Folks tomorrow's paper is one of the biggest in recent memory. Stock at a 52 week high as of this moment. As Craig Ferguson likes to say, "It's a great day in America everybody!!!!"

  21. A black hole? Are we seriously using a black hole as our logo in an industry people think is dying?

Is the black hole where all of Hunke's SVPs and VPs have gone?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I said several times this would expose many people here. I think it already has.

  23. If you had bothered to dial in you'd know it is NOT a black ball. But don't let that stop you from commenting.

  24. One of the biggest papers in recent memory will probably show up at our dropsite around 7:00 AM. That's how thing work in GPS land.

  25. Heh 2:37 thanks for the "yes bbbbbut!" Even you can't dampen the day! Go Mary Murcko and team!!!!

  26. Did anyone check out the sample Romensko had? Is that for real? The design is really weak. They can't really be planning that as a redesign?

    ReplyDelete
  27. The paper looks like a website which basically tells me the paper's demise is a matter of time and even management admits it now with a digital-first strategy.

  28. Jim. Get a life. Your commentary is old news. It's kind of sad you've waisted so much energy on you're soap box of discontent. The rest of us have moved on. Grow up.

  29. A new design won't make up for weak content. In a month, the new look will no longer be new.

Instead, improved content -- more exclusive stories with broad impact -- is what's required to save USAT.

What net additional newsroom resources -- reporters, editors, artists -- have been added with this relaunch? How is the paper substantively more competitive under this effort?

To rework an old expression: It's the content, stupid!

  30. Jim's analysis is spot on.
Speaking of spots, the Blue Ball of death has returned.

  31. 5:06 should get a copy editor ...

    ReplyDelete
  32. 5:09 Jim you are so out of touch. You are embarrassing yourself stupid. You are late to report change, the logo you posted was wrong and then you post that weak comment? You would have hated the energy in the room.

  33. Today was for the employees. Glad to see Martore and Kramer were able to ignite some enthusiasm.
Over the next months, time will tell if readers and/or advertisers bite and if this helps turn the tides.

I love all the 20 somethings excited over the cupcakes and champagne. In a few months, they too will be hit with all the realities that plague USA Today, if Kramer can't right the ship.

It's an enormous challenge. I wish him well.

  34. Don't know if the readers and/or advertisers will bite, but the design certain does. Makes it look like a website.

  35. goodness. al neuharth must be rolling over in her grave. with those florida velcro shoes of her's....

this is such a hoot! and where's electro-coupon rudd davis? the savior of hunke's big vanilla ass?

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
