Cherry Hill Confidential | Issue 09.30.12

This thread is exclusively for news and comments about the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J., where I hear there's suddenly been considerable upheaval in management.

Earlier: Salinas Confidential.

    1. And they are not from NJ.

  3. Our general manager, a good newspaperman, retired. Corporate is searching for a replacement. That's it. He was largely well-liked by folks in advertising and editorial.

  4. "Our general manager" never got the market. Nor does the managing editor who lives in another state.

  5. Good riddance. The soon-to-be-ex-Gannettoid can eat chocolate, cake and an iPad down his throat in retirement.

  6. Still cannot understand why so many incompetents continue in this newspaper's advertising department.

  7. I'd rather be in advertising than always playing catch up with the other papers in our area. When was the last time someone in news broke an story?

  8. The truth is no one in the Gannett chain wants any part of Cherry Hill, and the executive editor/general manager's departure was delayed because of it. Gannett has a long history of using the CP as a dumping ground for lesser editors and the staff has suffered for it, never more so than in the last four years. Our best editor was an AP guy, and Gannett sucked him dry. It's a shame, because with the Inquirer in so much turmoil, and Advance merging one of our major competitors, the Gloucester County Times, into one big, rural Patch-like site, we have a real chance to corner the market. But not with the gang that can't shoot straight

  9. The real puzzle is why the Philadelphia inquirer has not put the cp out of business by now. The inquirer has wasted opportunity after opportunity to do this. Southern new jersey is fertile ground for what little is left of the newspapers, yet how can they (inquirer) sit and continue to allow such a rag as the cp to keep going. Part of the answer lies within the poor management in philly.

  10. The answer to the question in the last post is that elitists at the Inquirer, editors and reporters alike, have for years looked down their Ivy League noses at the idea of covering the 'burbs. That was the case when they were flush with cash and staff, too. The "rag" exists because it doesn't look down on its coverage area and is still a loyal brand with readers. The Inky never made a dent in the BCT or GCT either, and there's little chance of it now.

  11. The C-P a loyal brand with readers? More people who do read newspapers get the philly inquirer, even though their south jersey edition is horrible. They do cover the "burbs" on the Pennsylvania side of the river more than new jersey, and that is evident.

  12. Going back to the early 2000's, the Inquirer do quite well re circulation figures in Gloucester and Burlington counties - matching or even surpassing the C-P.
From a former C-P circulation employee.
The Inquirer could make a comeback if they choose to.
I remember decades ago, the Inquirer had better coverage of Camden County than did the C-P.

  13. Well here we are, one year into content evolution/passion topics, the general manager gone and a horribly ill-equipped managing editor who was protected by the GM mucking up the process again. Say what you will about Gannett's brand of formula journalism, but Content Evolution is not rocket science. Despite Gannett riding to the rescue with CE help last week, and an interim GM coming in Wednesday, the ME keeps changing course and confusing an angry and frustrated staff. There's talk of a walkout. Welcome to the CP Meg

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
