The Bold Italic | Hints of a West Coast expansion

I've long wondered whether Gannett's experimental urban entertainment news and information site, The Bold Italic, will expand beyond San Francisco, where it launched in October 2009.

Now, the site's head of marketing spotlights a West Coast tour staffers will take this month and early next to three cities that would be likely new markets: Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Los Angeles. Chris Appelgren mentioned this in a brief video made at the Online News Association's annual conference, which concluded yesterday in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, three years after it started, I still don't see the Bold Italic's financial model. This much is clear from its about page, however: The site is "pro business."

More from ONA
Read Gannett's ONA Tumblr blog. USA Today Editor in Chief David Callaway spoke to Gannett editors there about digital plans for the paper. But other than a few short videos here and here on Tumblr, we don't get many specifics -- especially about USAT's plans to "leverage" all the community daily and TV station newsrooms.

Earlier: Going to pot? Bold Italic tries risky marijuana advertising.

  1. You really have to laugh at most of the Gamnettoids on this ONA list. seasoned journalists? Maybe three or four. The rest couldnt cover a rural water district hearing without heavy instruction and hand holding.

  3. Chet needs to go back to Sports. Dave T to making videos. The rest should go get some on the job experience at some local Gannett rag. These are not people who should be making decisions agaisnt the likes of Usa Today's competitors. They lose every time.

  4. 12:27 What's striking about that list is who isn't on it:

The California sites -- including especially Salinas/Visalia/Tulare -- are barely represented or aren't there at all, even though this was a California conference.

Plus, I don't see a single TV station represented.

On the other hand, Corporate (7) and USA Today (11) accounted for a third of the 55 folks there.

  6. Hmmm. Why isn't The Bold Italic "a G A N N E T T company"?

  7. 1:59 Let's be honest: That would not add to the site's hip-ness.

Indeed, the site's about doesn't mention Gannett. I searched the site, and found this in a couple help-wanted notices:

"Conceived by Gannett's innovation team in partnership with design firm IDEO, we unearth rare tidbits about the city and outline offbeat urban adventures."

  8. big fucking waste of time and capital. Someone remind me when anyone from this list actually produced some worthy content. Anyone? How about just some mediocre content?

Jessica Durando? Emily Brown? Anne Godlawsky. Desaree? Eight others. Really?

Personally, I'd like to see reports from anyone in attendance to see if this was worthwhile and what I can get from it to improve my job.

  9. Gannett has an innovation team? Would love to see the list of who's on it. Power play ahs, for sure.
