  1. Great overview of the entire paywall philosophy and necessity. A fun read. The picture and caption are priceless. As we used to say in TV, "audio and video agreement".

  2. I was happy to see that the latest On The Road light reading ditched Maryam's photo. But if the big on the road moment was Cannes, why no cheerleading on what a great investment it was for our brands?

    1. Because Cannes was a total waste of time and money, as it was in the pre-Banikarim Period.

  5. 9:59 I removed your comment because you've accused someone of sexual harassment without offering any evidence (for example: a memo, e-mail, etc.).

  6. What gives with the grossly imbalanced USA Today profiles for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney?

Romney gets credit for health care reform and fiscal reform as governor. But there's not a word about Obama's health care reform and fiscal reforms, or even about the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Romney also gets credit for saving the Salt Lake Winter Olympics. Obama, by contrast, comes across as a whiner who blames the GOP for his shortcomings.

The Obama profile also focuses on "birther"-related issues of where his father and mother were born, while Romney's talks about his father being chaiman of American Motors and governor of Michigan.

We all know that most Gannett papers will be endorsing Romney in the fall, but you'd think that the chain's flagship newspaper could at least be neutral in the news columns.

  7. Posting this again because it is a fact. Rob Gatto's resume came across my desk this week via a recruiter. This is a fact, no reason to delete this Jim. If you need proof I will post his resume for everyone to see. He is actively looking, Gannett and Pointroll should be aware of this.

    2. That is true. We are better off without our current CEO.

    3. Gatto and Ripmaster the dynamic duo that sunk Pointroll.

  8. The USA Today Sports Group continues to fail to sell USAT's Olympic section. Today's 10-page Olympic section had ZERO ads. So much for Beusse's proclamation that the Games would bring home $30 million in revenue.

    1. Beusse is a bigger failure than Banikarim. I didnt think that was possible. but he bragged about specific goals.

  9. Maybe Mr. Gatto is pretty smart after all.

  10. 'http://jimromenesko.com/2012/08/02/editor-mark-krzos-chick-fil-a-facebook-post-was-completely-inappropriate/#respond

This reporter in Fort Myers is likely going to lose his job. Personal social media and work-related reporting are complex. I tend to be very conservative about this and not post any personal or political views on my personal social media pages as long as I am employed by a news organization.

At the same time, we are being pushed to brand ourselves and show "personality" across all platforms. Legacy media with few exceptions is going down the tubes and every person has to look out for themselves.

I would not done what this reporter did, but will be sorry if he loses his job. This should be a teachable moment and get some real conversation going.

In today's climate, it won't. Maybe the editor at Fort Myers should have been more in touch with his staff and talked about such things before a staffer thought it was fine to share his personal view on his on Facebook page.

  11. I find it hard to believe that a post would appear here that claims media bias on the side of Romney.
Obama has the whole of the national media as an unpaid campaign tool.
And someone claims that USA today is leaning for Romney.
    I really needed a laugh

  12. Any other sites policing social media use of employees?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Jim, it would be great if you could monitor Gannett papers' presidential endorsements and give us a breakdown of how it comes out, numbers wise.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am with you 5:26...for anybody to claim the media's bias favors Romney is laughable. If not for media as his lapdog, Obama would have zero chance in November.

  15. I think the Fort Myers thing is absurd! First, who cares what someone says on their PERSONAL Facebook page!
Second, are reporters intelligent enough to be able to set aside their personal beliefs to provide unbiased stories to readers.

As a younger person this is the kind of stuff that will hurt newspapers. Bad move to police personal social media of staffers

  16. It's unbelievable that Gannett doesn't have a social media policy in place. I lost my job two months ago after inadvertently violating my paper's nonexistent social media policy, and we're seeing more and more of these types of cases crop up.

One of these days, Gannett is going to fire the wrong person and going to get slapped with a helluva lawsuit.

    1. 10:34 you were fired yet somehow you still don't provide your name. Not buying it

    2. I'm not sure what the Fort Myers reporter said that was so horrible. Unless I only read a partial post I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

  17. I'm you got your laugh, 5:26. Romney, of course, thanks to Citizens United, needs no unpaid help (even if your accusation were true) because he can buy all the help he needs.

  18. If the anti-Chick-fil-A reporter in Ft. Myers is 20-something and a brown nose, he'll get to keep his job.

    If he's over 40, he's toast.
Such as it is with Gannett.

Won't matter if he's won a ton of awards, or gets along with co-workers, or has lots of institutional knowledge and contacts in the community. Gannett doesn't value any of that.

  19. WTF?

    Google this, sir.

Did the unions/Obama outspend McCain in 2008?

Facts. They're mean. Get used to it.

This is what makes Gannett, a third-rate operation -- lack of strong, objective fact-gathering.

  20. 7:26, I'm not putting my name here because I don't want to be forever associated with being fired for an alleged ethical violation (by Gannett, of all places) anytime someone Googles me.

You're certainly free to believe that I made all of this up, but if I was in the business of inventing stories about my employment, I certainly would come up with something more interesting (and flattering) than that.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
